Your BEM 'Body Electrics Module' is failing. It controls the remote locking, lighting etc and has something to do with the staring sequence. It's located just above you left knee while you're in the drivers seat. To replace it you'll need to remove the dash fascia, undo the 2 screws holding it in and unplug it and throw it, installing the new one is just a reversal of what you did to get it out. Not a hard job, but as yours is a Monty you will have to make sure you get a green (mid series) one. You'll also have to retrain your remote for the central locking as well.
If the starting issue gets worse, instead of banging on the wheel, give the dash above your L knee a firm hit while holding the key over in the 'Start' position.

Take out the ashtray then remove the screw on the left of where it was, then gently pull the the whole ashtray/radio surround out from the bottom. Then undo the screws (there are 6 or 7 of them from memory) holding the whole dash fascia (the dark gray or brown plastic) in, including the ones above the instrument cluster (you'll need a stubby Phillips head) Then pull the fascia out far enough to be able to unplug all the connections for trip comp, switches etc. It would pay to label what went where to make re assembly easier. Also putting the trans selector in 1st and dropping the steering wheel down to its lowest setting helps too. The BEM is only held in by 2 screws.

Yellow box? I have no idea. The BEM is where the big long connector plugs in, just below the fuel gauge. Just unplug it and undo the 2 screws either side and it should just drop out. It's a box like thing about 10x20cm

The yellow box you refer to tells me 2 things.
1 Its a V8 2 Its a manual. The yellow box is the ECU for the auto on the V8's. The BEM is located above this. Brett
