maybe try and mimic the way the factory does it. have the "flat" bit on the top as one panel of vynal, then have the two "sides" stictched to it.
have a look at a pic of a leather console lid to see what i mean |

If you need to make the vinyl stretch a little then use a heat gun, get it hot enough to soften but don't burn it.

Thanks walker for the heat gun idea. I want to make it look a bit stock o with the idea of the stich down the middle and the stiching either side of that. Have the large strip down the middle and 2 smaller ones on the side.

Yep heat gun will do the trick... If you can't get a heat gun just use a hair dryer (good quality one), any vynal product will be far more pliable with a little heat, you should be able to get at least a centimeter of stretch out of it (for a 50 x 50cm sheet) before you get too thin (and provided it's good quality vynil), just don't go over board. Use a good quality contact adhesive too... I think you can get bostik contact adhesive from most hardware stores, just be careful when you apply the vynal if you use contact, it sticks quick and hard, you can re-activate it with heat but it might get lumpy if your not careful. You will need a good bond if you stretch vynal beyond a certain point to avoid it trying to return to its natural state. HTH, cheers.
