XH = EL? If so, just pull the central locking pin straight outta the hole.

Removing the surround from the locking button? I'm assuming the XH use the same door trims as the other E-Series, in which case the surround doesn't need to come out, but the actual button does. I think there's a better way then what I'm about to tell you, but for the life of me I can't remember it.
1.Grab a rag 2.Grab Vice Grips 3. Put Rag over button 4.Attach vice grips SECURELY, but not too tight, or you'll break it!!! 5. Pull off with force, it feels really bad, and you'll be afraid of breaking it, but it does come off. Oh and open your window... I have a nice scratch in the window of the Fairmont thanks to my overly ambitious father...

Really??? They actually have a thread that clamps on as they get pushed on. If they are put on properly, they shouldn't come out unless you apply a fair bit of force.
I could be weak, or your's are worn?

Same! They come off pretty easily - mine have been on there since factory (100,000kms ago). Getting them back on is an... experience You have to pull out the clear centre bit (by about 5mm) sit in the car, lock it, and push the knob back on. Took me 4 goes to get it right, so it sits flush when locked.

Yeah, worse going back on. Just make sure the door is shut and locked. Oh and i didnt use locking vice grips. They have a hell of a lot more leverage due to their design, so just use a pair of pliers with jaws that stay parallel, and youll be fine.
