Hey,
bought a sports wheel and boss kit for my xh ute, havnt been able to remove the factory wheel, there seems to be no threads to attatch a wheel puller to and iv tried getting somebody to pull it while i tapped it with a hammer and brass drift. didnt budge and i was cautious about going overboard and about collapsing the steering column. its got a single allen key stud in the centre of the spline and looks to have a square spline with flattened corners. im wondering if theres a trick to getting it off that i just havnt learnt yet, any help would be appreciated minez |

my guess,is that it has the ed wheel,not the ef/l style one...mine was the same on my xh...i ended up giving up..it was near impossible..i think i was looking at putting and ef/l wheel on just so i could put an xr one on.the prob i had was with the bosskit.ask snap..he is a wealth of knowledge with these.

I've replaced both steering wheels on my cars, and I've never had any success with either by wiggling/thumping/side hitting, etc getting the old ones off.
Best way I found was putting on a steering wheel puller, putting tension on, and getting a soft faced hammer, and tapping upwards on the underside - wheel releases pretty quickly. This was on on EF/EL wheels, and as mentioned, I'd suspect you're running an EB/ED wheel (no puller holes eh ??). You'll have to improvise with a puller setup, and try same perhaps. Another option - this will destroy the old wheel - get a grinder with a cutting disc and cut a slot close to the shaft - split it with a chisel - definately be careful with this one, and definately a last resort.

You just need to put lots of lube onto your shaft and have a good old pull.

best way with that one if to undo the nut almost all the way off, use a plastic mallet and hit the nut wile you push up with your legs as you hit it, most times this way works.

Pull heaps hard at the top and punch the back of it with your other hand at the bottom. It works well and i've changed about 7 steering wheels. Remember to leave the screw in the centre in a couple of turns so the wheel doesn't fly off and whack you in the head.

I used claw pulley with custom setup (no proper wheel puller holes to use). All I managed to do is bow the steering wheel at all three points and it still didn’t budge. Tried on three different occasions including pulling and whacking with mallet. Next step, grinder.
