Guys and Girls!
I would like to know if it is difficult to replace the door lock cyclinder on the drivers side door of a 1998 EL Fairmont Ghia. Would any special tools be required? Anthony |

yeh, someone jammed a screwdriver in my EL xr6 so I wouldn't mind knowing either, is it pretty easy like the ea's or what..

Same sort of deal id say, remove the door panel, wind the window back up, and theres one little clip. Pull that off, and the lock slides out with a bit of a twist. Nothing too hard! Instructions for removing the interior trim panel are in the technical documents section of the site.

I can't find the technical document you are referring to. Removing the door trim appears as though it will be very difficult. |

Not that hard.
Annoying yes. Hard, no. Undo all the screws around the outside of the trim. (I'm assuming ED to EL are basically the same ?) Take out the plastic plugs hiding the torx screws holding in the door handle. Rotate the handle, and pull out. (hard to explain, the rod it's attached to has a 180 degree square bend in it) Get your central locking button out (annoying) There are several ways to do this, and I'm sure mine is the wrong way. Wind down the window, put a rag on the button, and attach vice grips Pull up... Undo the screws holding on your Mirror adjustment panel things (I know, my wordage skills are effen awesome), if there electric (like mine) undo the plugs and put 'em aside for later. Then just yank the door trim up to remove it. Takes a fair bit of force. Rinse and repeat Somebody stop me if I forgot something...

Yeah, pretty much right. Pull all the screws out from around the side of the trim, dont forget the one on the arm rest. Pop the little cover out from the middle of the door handle. undo that bolt and pull the handle out. Just play with it till it makes sense!! Take off the lock button thing, good chance you will break the arm under neath it. that will make sense once you break it too. Unclip the plug from the back of the power window adjuster, will take a bit of wriggling if it hasnt come out before. Take off the window winder with the window where you want it. lift the whole trim upwards and it should come out. Last edited by nicco on Sat Dec 03, 2005 1:42 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

The door lock buttons DON"T have to be removed on EF?EL models unlike earlier ones MR FORD saw the error of his ways and made the door trim slip over the buttons

i know of the EF (assuming EL) that you DO have to take the dor lock button off. It sits in a cradle with a hole in the bottom for the rod to go through. the button cant come through the cradle.
But you can just twist the button off, its on a thread. just takes a bit of manuvering. |

I successfully replaced my lock cyclinder!
I don't think I have ever sworn so much in my life! What a horrible task to do! I only broke one thing! Once the trim etc. was re-attached the lock button did not sit far enough down when the car was locked so I thought I would put a cloth over it and smack it down with a hammer. I didn't have much success, instead I just snapped the lock button and the plastic square it sits in. C'Est La Vie... |

Hammer + plastic trims ~= goodness those little square things are cheap from ford, $5 or something. a mate broke one of mine. As for it not sitting down far enough, the button is on a thread, so you have to juggle the door trim, and screw the button on far enough for it to sit nicely. |

the lock button has a piece in side it that slides down, the bit that holds it to the lock rod... u need to lever it down, and than put the button on...
good method is to open the window close and lock the door and than it basically just slides into place with a small tap with your hand.. door trims are easy once uve donea few |

I've done the same thing. Couldn't be bothered looking at it so i just pulled the rods out so the buttons don't work !! After 3 weeks of not having my doors together and limited time to get it done, i didn't really care! My alarm lets me know if it's unlocked anyway....
