Now that is even cooler.

heh i was thinking of how he could manage that
like maybe a white led underneath... and like a bit of celefane (how ever you spell it) underneath the needle and as it goes along, the celefane has a different colour

hard to explain :S

Umm, that'd be a bit tacky.

I was thinking more of multi-colored LEDs. If they exist. Either way, at least we know that it can be done.

Under the cluster could work.....but I can't think how you'd get celofane to gradually change color like that. Anyway...something for those technogeeks to think about. Then do it for me :P

just to be techincaly correct, multi-colour led's do exist. have multiple legs, one common, just hook power up to certain leg and hey presto. have all hooked up and some controller to shift power between legs and hey presto again, multi-colour changing led's.

also, great idea with the colour changing needle, NOT ricey, elegant and practical. would be easy to do too, hardest part would be sensing your shift (light up) point. wouldnt be much use during the day but at nite it would be damn nice. any1 know how the tacho works? is it just a varying voltage? if it is, itd be sooo easy.......

im pretty sure i can tap into the wire that feeds the tacho circut in the cluster, and use my own circut to count the pulses or whatever then light up the led when it exceeds the set level, im not too sure bout the speedo, ill go pull me cluster out now and start to seriously think about how this is all gunna work

thanks for the comments so far guys :)

man no probs,

just let us know how it turns out, its an interesting concept and one that would make an excellent doco

stealthy, non-obtrusive and practical

whats not to like??

Some further ideas.

1. I've pulled apart my cluster, and there's PLENTY of room inside for more 'stuff'.

2. The 'beep' you get from the speed warning, comes from the cluster, NOT the trip comp. So wire up a LED to the speaker signal, and you've got ALL the hard work done for you. Side effect: it'll flash for low fuel too, and of course you'll need a TC.

Colour me interested.

thats also an idea, tap into the low fuel warning lamp, and put an led on the fuel needle, same can be done for the temp gauge

making it change colour would be easy as....

buy one tri colour led rbg and the when all 3 are on its white, and just use the clouour chart to get any over clour u want.

then just mount it in the neddel head say...
like make a cap for it and put it at the base so the its facing out the same derection as the rod(niddle) and make it into a fiber optic and do cuts on the back of it like my angel eyes so that the light can escape and then for it to change colour say if u want it to go from white to yellow to red have 3 s**t light kits and just wire tehn up type of thing. just go into jaycar those nerds love this kinfd of s**t they will know what u need and will tell u how to do it
