i had an idea just then, what if when your tacho reaches around the redline area, the needle illuminates red? so if you rev the engine and the needle illuminates white, but when it hits say 5000 rpm, it changes colour to red to let you know its at redline.

just a thought remeber.

proberbly not everyones cup of tea, but some opinions?

i was thinking some more and you could also fit the same idea to the speedo as a overspeed alarm (along with the trip computer overspeed) by the speedo needle turning red when you go over 120 or simmilar.

im looking into parts right at this second so give us a few weeks and you never know, i just might have some pictures :)

I like the idea, no way ricey at all.

now all you need is a speedo that flashes red and blue when you go over 110 :P, just to remind you.

Id love to do that to my tacho when i buy the mid cluster, itd be so much cooler than the blue led mod :P

I wish i payed more attention in the electronics class at school.

Nice idea. Dont know what your plans for it are, but here is one idea I just came up with.

If there was a way you could segregate the redzone area. In the EF white needles are illuminated blue (using ym cluster as the example). If there was a way you could put red LEDs in just the redline area so it illuminates red when the needle travels into it.

Did that make sense?

I reckon that'd be awsome, a stealthy shift light, not one sitting on your dash to show off. You'll need an RPM activated switch to enable the red light to turn on. Only problem I can see wiull be finding room to install it in the cluster and that.

heres my plan... either tap into the tacho/speedo wire and use some kind of circut to count the pulses (or whatever) and when it gets to a certain level, trigger a LED which will be a red 3mm one pointed directly at the needle from the back of the mechanisim, therefore lighting up only the needle and not anything else. same concept with the speedo...

or...

i dunno if this will work or not but, have a hall effect sensor (a little device that looks like a transistor, but measures magnetic feild vairations) mounted on the back side of the tacho/speedo dial directly reverse of the 120KM/H marking. put a light little strip of magnet on the back of the needle, so when the needle passes over the 120KM/H marking, it technically goes over the hall effect sensor, triggering it, lighting up the LED and making the needle turn red.

hope that is written easy enough to give some kind of understanding of whats goin on :)

and

... i can run the wires for the leds out of the cluster to another point in the car where the circut could be located.

which idea should i go with? personally i reckon the second one is simpler therefore less can go wrong... but you never know with electronic s**t :P

thanks all

Actually, the Vanquishes have this on their tachos.

They start off at blue....then change to green. Through to yellow, orange then red.

Now that is even cooler.
