Hey guys. Has anyone shortened there manual gear knob from there gear shifter. I am looking at shortening it approx 5cm. Is there anything i need to know other then i will need to cut it short and thread it on the gear stick.

You may be able to cut it and re-thread it....
A mate of mine made a new one up at work, which was shorter and works great! If you know someone that can work with metal at all, you could probably ge them so make one, couldn't imagine it would be too expensive. |

From what i have been told you need to cut it at the bottom and then reweld it as the top part is tapered and gets quite thick - eg you will be left with a shifter that is too fat to attach a knob to. I want to do the same thing but have not got round to it yet. I was also worried about how far away the shifter would sit when in 5th or 3rd.

I shortened mine, did it myself.
Just cut it in the middle then cut your 5cm of your offcut then reweld it. Just think about it carefully though, I ended up bringing mine back to standard hight a month later cause it was a C***. It makes 1st gear to much of a reach in the pano. Dont know about sedans though

as said above the shifter gets very thick and then goes flat at the box i just made a new one i found a bolt the same thread as the knob and then welded that to a flat bit of steel and then bolted that to the box

Did you have any problems with reaching the lever - did the shortening make it further away?

yeah it did i am going to make another one and angle it like the original my one is straight and very very short it was a test shifter just have not got round to making another

Dont know about sedans though Whoever the yoyo was who owned my XC before me did this, however he did a poor job of re-welding it, gear shift snaped off as I was reversing out of my driveway. Make sure you weld it properly!

My brother shortened the shifter on my EF (its now timmeh's). Just chopped about an inch or so off the top and then cut a new thread - I used to have an aftermarket gear knob though, but the standard knob went back on it too.

k guys. its sounds like it can be done il get myself a grinder and get into it and c either weld it or rethread it whichever easier. but now the question is how much kw will i gain.lol. now now seriously is it harder to drive or annoying cos its shorther. i might pass or just shorthen it like 3cm i dont want it to be a b**ch i do enough city driving and the clutch is heavy as we all know in au's well mine is anyway.

cut it down it feels much nicer more like a sports cat instead of a truck!
from memory i just welded a new one to my liking much shorter. its about 1 or 2cm shorter then the center consol armrest.

Simple fix for a decent shifter... Go buy a Shifter of a Mustang T-10 box they reach more over to the drivers seat i have one im my car and it rocks... especially for the mrs who has short arms
