I have been annoyed by my center consoles auto shifter cover squeaking for ages now, I lined the plastic inside with felt, sprayed it with Silicon spray, widened the clips inside and it hasn't worked. It never made sense.
So today on my hands and knees I scoped that muther real close and tight. With eyeball to plastic, ear to console I prodded and pushed and moved that thing around and noticed, ladies and gentlemen. That the hole around the auto selectors metal shaft, which is connected to the moving plastic strip under the cover that highlights the gear selected, isn't big enough. Especially in 3rd, 2nd and 1st, when the selector shaft is at such an angle, the edge of the small plastic hole jams up against the selector shaft and rubs making that awful plastic against plastic noise, especially over bumpy roads.
Fix. Removed gear selector handle/button, bolt, then removed auto's cover plate, and made the hole a little larger. She is very quiet now, and I can actually hear the sound of the tires over bumps now. For now at least anyway, until the new squeaks arrive...

I don't think he did, he's talking about the 'slide' that moves with the shifter to what would be a large rectangular hole covered.

I think you will get squeaks and rattles out of any car after a while. Yeah just better to pump up the volume.

Actually I've really made the car pretty quiet now.
I had hundreds of squeaks and rattles, after driving a Lexus LS400 you really do notice things. I've gone through the entire car and hushed things up a bit. It makes the car feel more solid over bumps, feels well put together and I suppose yeah, that floats my boat a bit.

I'm the same as you Kit. I've had the odd squeak or rattle drive me insane trying to find/fix it. My shifter was one of the culprits too.
When I put my alarm in last month I took the opportunity while the dash was in pieces to tighten every bloody screw/bolt I could see and make sure everything went back on tight.
Nice and quiet in the Fairmont, just how I like it.

I had rattles coming from my centre console a while ago I couldn't quickly figure out. By the end of the week I was frustrated and depressed, and I was looking on both sides of the dash for the noise.
Then it dawned on me, my friggin sunglasses were in the cup holder rattling away. That one I solved well and truley. :(

Add me to the group of those that hate squeaks and rattles. My car is older 1991 Fairmont Ghia and I really, really get annoyed and frustrated by non-mechanical, meant to be there noises :D

It's clipped in, some careful screwdriver work will pop it out.
