Hey guys i am pondering on the idea of making some panels up and fitting about 80 leds on brake lights and about 30 on reverse and about 80 on the indicators to replace the bulbs in my tail lights. i want to put in a audio system however i just realised that it would be difficult to get to the bulbs if they blow. So i thought about leds. i know some VY and VZ come with them as teh tail lights. What do you guys think of the idea.

Great idea, but:
- It wouldn't be cheap. high bright LEDs can be several dollars each. Although buying that many you should get a discount, it'll still sting. - It's illegal as they're not ADR approved lights. The ones on the VZ statos have been tested and approved. - Being illegal it'll void you'r insurance as well.

Not sure. But to be safe, ensure that they are visible for at least 200m during the day. (thats the ADR spec), and of course they have to be the right colours. White indicators aren't allowed on cars newer the 1970something.

Coloured bulbs are ok, as long as they are the right colour as data_mine said
Leds tho, another problem is your indicators will flash quicker, and your reverse wont be as bright as bulbs (typicaly)

I belive the red part MUST remain red when no lights are on, it cannot be clear, it must appear red and not just cause you got a red bulb in it, also a rear facing red reflector must be present at the rear of the car on either side, not sure if it has to be part of the tail light though (think it does)

Hit ebay, there is a seller called "wiseleader" selling lots of 20 LED's incluging metal mounting grommets and current limiting resistors for about $12 each lot (hong kong shipping) works out (barely) cheaper than electronic stores once you add in the resistors and mountng harware
your indicator will flash a LOT faster, but hooking up a dummy load/extra indicator globe somewhere will fix it, and the reverse lights could be replaced with a 3w luxeon star LED (which would be MUCH brighter than the standard reverse lamps)

they sell them on ebay too, but it would look just like a normal globe from the outside wheras using LED's spread evenly over the entire tailight would create an even, and much better looking effect

hmm i was thinking about this the other day actually. Ill have to sus out the adr s**t now that i know.
I was thinking of maybe getting a whole heap of truck taillight....from work and putting the on one board. I always thought that if you change something with you tail lights the only legal thing is that they cant be destracting or the cant be of a lesser brightness than standard.... Ill suss this out abit more
