I have a 1991 EB series I Fairmont Ghia. On 03/05/2005 I had the car retrofitted with the newer 134A airconditioning system and regassed. I have used the airconditioning twice since then. The first time was just before Christmas and the air being pumped in the car was less than cool. There was also a hissing sound coming from, what appeared to be under the dash on the front passenger side.

The second time I used the airconditioning was yesterday 01/01/2006 at about 6:50 pm. The car had been sitting in the garage all day. I drove about half way to work - some 10 kilometres when the air just became unbearable so I turned the airconditioning on closed up the windows. I was unimpressed as the air coming from the vents was hotter than the outside temperature and the hissing sound started again.

Now the doors, etc on the normal ventilation system are all in order - that is fresh air and so on, so I don't think there is a leak in the system. I have also run several diagnostic system checks and the climate control passes with no errors showing.

With all this in mind any ideas or suggestions you have will be most appreciated.

A lack of gas in the A/C system.
They more than likey didnt pump it up to the normal pressure as they may think that a seal will give out.
Well thats what I was told when my old EB1 had to be re-gassed and had the same lack of cold air and hissing noise like you are having.
Get them or another A/C place to put in the right amount of gas and at the correct pressure.
If a seal goes then they will replace it, not expensive and you will be back in the "fridge" again.

If there is a hissing sound coming from under the dash, its either vaccum or possibly the evaporator core.

Most aircon mechanics worth their salt will test the system after regassing with a meter that detects if their ir aircon gas leaking. They put the tester in front of the vents to check if the evap core has shat itself. Fairly common on the early e-series im lead to believe.

As well as any Ford aircon system retrofitted for the newer gas wont work as well as it used to. The system has to be designed specifically for the gas for it to work at its peak.

Try clamping off one of the heater hoses under the bonnet...if the air comes good then it's possibly your heater tap leaking

All 0of the above. Plus, if you leave the air con sitting fore so long, the seals will perish, and it will leak out, use it at least once a week.

Nah, they use the same... But the AU has better cooling capabilities because of their open grill and bigger area behind the bumper.

In my car, the "coldness" level at idle in traffic is pretty poor, low speeds its adequate... High speeds, its freeze yr nuts off cold. And the system test out perfect.. No leaks, etc, etc.

In your case, if its still not really cold after some time at high speeds, like on the freeway, I'd say it was fairly low on gas.

My AU ute is freeze your nuts off at idle after 2 minutes. Even when it got to 49 deg at home the other day.

It's that cold you can see vapour come out the vents when it's really hot in the cabin ... LOL

Territory can be just as cold ... but the huge cabin doesn't allow it to get as cold as quick as my ute.

When I put it on 3 it sops after about 15 secs of running, I mean stops dead. Is this a fan issue?

Driving my old man to the wreckers today, not that cold even on highway. And it was on boost as well.

Mine cuts out on anything but 4 on my eb. Not sure why. Still freezes nicely, but the fan just stops spinning? Flick it to 4 and it starts up again but?

Dilbert - Sounds like yours is pretty low on gas then.

Dilbert and Andrew - Heater resistor unit in heater box is fubar. Fairly common problem. Its the small silver box behind the glovebox. Aparently easy to get to, and just as easy to pocket / permanent loan from the wreckers to make 100% sure.

Must use your air conditioner at least once a week to stop the seals drying out. :)

hi guys
my ea still has the original gas and still works great except the fan also stops after about 5 mins when you switch it to 3 but still works on 1 2 and 4.. ive been told that there is a resister on the fan to determine what speed it runs at.. if i only know were the the resister is so i can replace it....
