Hey guys, any one know how to repair a trip computer. I had the led go out that illuminates the trip comp, so i pulled it and replaced it. Funny thing is i must have put it in the wrong way, as there was a large amount of white smoke, and the smell of burning electrics. I want my trip comp back. Willing to send it return post paid to get it fixed as these things are dear as poison second hand, and there aint any at any sydney wreckers atm.

the led will sometimes blow if they are in the wrong way, or somehow short out

try a normal bulb back in it, or refit another LED making sure its in the right way :)

Have pulled the Comp and it appers that the black chip on the rear circuit board is blown. It is marked with 53H and the motorola symbol. also has markings of T30 and what looks like SEL, but that is the bit that is burnt/bubbled. ANy one know what this chip is and where i can get a replacement

Are yes a LED will blow if put in the wrong way.

I would probably look for a new trip computer rather that replacing the chip.

If your trip comp is stuffed, it might be easier and maybe cheaper just to get a new one...

putting in an LED the wrong way couldnt have caused that, more likely there was a dead short somewhere and its drawn too much current and popped the IC you described.

Unless the lamp is driven by the chip itself. They are pulse width modulated to be able to dim the display.
