they can be fitted to a base model.
you just need to add the plug and few wires as the tech doco discribes..

i would double check the wires you added to the cluster are going to the right pin??

ive done it to mine and it works fine!!
otherwise you might have a fault in the trip comp?

you dont need the looms to do it. i have a "Povo Pack" and mine works fine. its just a b**ch when ya cant get connectors small enough. so i just frayed the wires and shoved it in so they connected :)

in ef falcons if you remove the plastic bit where the cluster goes there is already a wire waiting for it to be plugged into.
my mate put one in and it works fine.

Which doesnt mean its impossible at all! Its not fkn hard to run wires through the dash of falcons. Also Fabz, unless you have a Fairmont EF/Ls require you to add and remove wires from the clock plug. Yes the trip and clock use the same plug - no its not plug and play.

What dont you understand? I said unless you have a Fairmont, which already has the trip comp and appropriate wiring, you need to run some to the clock plug, to make it a trip comp plug, as well as remove a wire. I've done it to 2 EFs now, its piss easy, and a great mod.

Maybe a problem with the computer itself. Have you tried pressing the reset button a number of times ? Maybe you've got a magic Falcon with outstanding economy heheh.
