if its an ebII then those through to the eds were boot buttons .. when the key is in acc position make sure no lights on the dash are lit up .. if its a normal eb then it wont have the red flashy light on the bottom left of ya dash that says smartlock...

when i did mine
1 .. shut all doors not locked
2 .. turn key to acc no lights on dash boot button 3 times in 5 secs
3.. press any button on remote so the cars locks go upndown
4.. press any button again for each remote you have up to 4 of them
5.. turn key to off and get locked when its finished you can open your door

learning mode starts after step 2 when youve pressed a remote button .. so if the remote you have doesnt work then learning mode wont happen
