correct. swap clusters, swap milage readings. there is a chip contained withing the cluster which has the kms on it, which you can swap to keep your readings. AFAIK you cant actually wind the EF/EL's back as they are digital...

I'd also like to know if it can be done.
I put a brand new EL XR Engine in my EF a few years back. But never changed the KM Reading. So it reads 270,000 k's but has only done about 70,000 k's..... Would be nice if it read the correct distance for my motor...

As I understand it, Ford can change the reading with their WDS instrument.... but I think only once? And I'd hate to think what it would take to convince them to do so... BYO kneeling pad.....

Odometer and service data is stored in a small 8 pin smc eeprom chip on the back of the instrument cluster casing.I had mine swapped over at a friendly tv repair shop when I upgraded the instrument cluster on my EL Falcon.Dont know about the ECU thing that doesnt sound right as the ECU is for engine and transmission management only.

Exactly, the cluster contains the odo, it has nothing to do with the ECU.
(For the AUs, and probably EL) To change the odo, to whatever you need to replace the e-prom, and then use an electronic tool (that VDO/Ford have) to connect to the e-prom and adjust the odo. Of course, you can't just rock up there and say, change this to 50000 kms, you need to have a good excuse, as there is a massive fine for winding back the kms. Don't do it anyway just to benefit from it. Do it only if the car has done that many kms.

no its not. it has still travelled the ks shown . just record the ks when these things were replaced or rebuilt. the easiest way is to find a cluster with the correct ks on it. because they cannot be changed unless you change the memory chip. eeprom or something like that?? |

That is absolute frog s**t NO CLUSTERS WIND THESELVES FORWARD OR BACKWARD I have an au and have changed the cluster to a BRAND NEW Cluster and the car originally had 130,000ks it has 45,000 on it now, and for the EA winding forward your a spinout what a whole lot of crap. In EF/EL - AU ( don't know about BA) the K's are kept on an eeprom in the cluster this can be changed by anyone knowing about surface mount soldering or using the device ford dealers have.

I have been told some workshops (speedo specialists) can re-program the odometer on ELs. Personaly I don't know of one. Even if you rebuild the engine, diff etc it is not a new car, the odometer also tells people how many k's the suspension, brakes, bearings and body have done. You need to keep receipts with what the odometer is when rebuilds are carried out so future buyers can understand and believe what they are buying is real.
