As suggested, I pulled off the weather strip around the A pillar, and put silicone in the gaps: looks like the roof is spotwelded (?) onto the rest of the car, and the gaps were between the two sections, varying between 2 and 7cm in length, about half/one millimetre wide.
It's sunny up here today (yay!) but rain is coming all next week, so will see how it goes.

Lifted up the passenger carpet, and saw a little trickle of water.
The water is seeping across the passenger footwell from somewhere in the centre - couldn't lift the carpet any further, and followed the little water course as far as the gearbox hump.
Any ideas?

Actually, it's coming down the inside of the firewall.
Not a huge amount, but it then pools in at the bottom and soaks the carpet.
I have the carpet lifted up now, with something underneath holding it up, so it does not get wet.
As mentioned above, I sealed the roof strip (above the A pilllar), so that should be fine (it looks waterproof enough).
Anyone have any ideas where else it may be coming from?

The air conditioner drain is under there somewhere, I've heard of it blocking up and causing problems, which can be intermittant. You said Queensland I thought air-con lol.

Still leaking when it rains heavilly (or for a prolonged period).
I'll apply some more silicon to the top of the roof line.
I now have small towls under the carpet, replacing when soaked.

Hi, had the same problem with my ef, II, if you use the aircon alot(high humidity), get up under the front, there is a black water drip tray that drains out the front of the fire wall, near the bell housing, there is the black plastic drain, I pushed a 150mm long 6mm drill bit down the hole, and the water tank flowed freely, drained a bout a liter or more out, stoped the carpet getting wet, hair dryer worked well for drying out the car... good luck. :)
