hey all, i have noticed a few engines with what looks like polished heads, intake manifolds, extractors etc. just wondering what you guys did to get them in that condition?

I dont think they would be polished heads, i think you mean rocker covers, but anyways..
Either pay big bucks to get the items chromed, or HPC'd/ceramic coated, or do it the hard way like most people do on here and sand them back smooth and start working it with some metal polish

yea i meant to say rocker covers lol. my bad.
is sanding them back and polishing them take alot of work? |

Yeah, it takes a while if you do it all by hand lol. Havent polished a rocker cover, but ive sanded a couple back smooth for painting. Ive polished a BBM plus a few other things and its not something that you can do in 2 hours
 . It took me a few days to do my BBM but i was doing it a few hours on and off sort of thing. Hardest thing is removing as much of the pitting as possible by sanding it down with course grades working you way up into finer grades to try and remove the scratches/scuffs left by the previous grades.. I went from something like 100 grit dry all the way up to 1500 grit wet with the BBM. The smoother the metal before you polish, the better the polished surface will look. When you get to the polishing stage, you'll need to go over it a few times with some sort of metal polish, i just use Autosol, its good stuff |

in regards to the high temp paint used on rocker covers etc, how much do they cost per can?

it kinda varys from 10 dollars too 20 dollars isnt very expensive paint, i got my VHT paint on special at repco for 10 bucks a can, was pretty happy with that.

Is it better to do the 3 step flameproof system that VHT recommends?
i.e. step 1 primer, step 2 paint color, step 3 clear coat. I want to spray in intake pipe with some of this hi heat paint coating to protect the pipe from radiant heat and cool my intake temps right down. I already have a heat shield on, but would like to go further with the intake pipe as it sits so close to the rocker cover and that radiats a lot of heat for my liking.

Whats the best way to strip the cover right back? just get straight into sanding it? or use some kind of paint thinners to strip the paint away first?

Hmm im not too sure on that one, to get the best results it probably would pay to go with what VHT recommends. I usually spray things in the engine bay with Duplicolor groundcoat as primer, whatever VHT paint you want for the colour and then just duplicolor clear enamel to seal it all. Havent used any of VHT's primers or clears so dont know how well they work. I was thinking of spraying my intake piping as well, as it does get fairly warm on longer drives. Being polished and alloy doesnt help my case either lol. If you do spray your intake piping with the VHT stuff, let us know how it goes - im also after cooler intake temps and so far the only thing i know that will keep it cooler is ceramic coating.. lowie57 wrote: Whats the best way to strip the cover right back? just get straight into sanding it? or use some kind of paint thinners to strip the paint away first? Use a brush-on or spray-on paint stripper to get it back to bare metal. I used a Septone product in a spray can and it worked okay. Other way would be to take it somewhere to get it bead blasted or something |
