Was removing the steering wheel off my 1994 Ef Fairmont, and it was a real b**ch. When it gave way the bolt ened up flying off and the plug that connects to the air bag on the column side has tore off. I can see a few copper flat strands hanging out that would have connected inside the plug.
Is the black unit just behind the steering wheel for the air bag and can I still put the steering wheel back on and drive it? |

just did some research and the plug is torn from the clock spring. What is that and can I still drive the car?

Clock spring is used to transfer electrical signals from the steering column to the rotating steering wheel.
Without it you cannot use any of the steering wheel buttons, nor will the Airbag work. You probably will have an airbag light flashing on the dash now as well. Easy to replace but they need to be not wound up while it is not in place.

I had the bolt in a fair way too, it ended up over the drivers seat ( and my head) and landed on the carpet directly behind the drivers seat facing thread up. Now I cannot get the bolt to start, nor can I get the bolt I had with the new wheel to start either. The bolt has taken about 7 to 8 mm off the start of the thread in the column. I dont know if I could save the thread or is it now a new column aswell?
Life sucking at the moment, just did both my knee's at work and the boss has already stopped paying me and taken the work van, so now no car and limited budget. I hope Lawson wreckers tomorrow wont be too harsh on me with a price. I have till miday to get the new one out and get to and from with 2 bung knee's. The mrs's friend may be able to give me a lift, thats a plus. |

Maybe if I buy a tap and die set tomorrow I wont have to replace the column? What sizes do I need to do this to the steering bolt's threated hole in the column? I think there will still be heaps of the bolt in to hold the steering wheel in place and it will be blue goo'ed to help it lock. Just need to get the blot started on the right path

So my little sister who lives 20 minutes away would not pop over to give me a lift to the local petrol station for smokes last night, but a Fordmods member who doesnt know me from a bar of s**t drives from Werrington at 11pm last night to personally hand me a replacement column and clock........
The column I have now to be used to replace the f**k one has a broken arm on the light stalk. Do I have to remove the whole clock spring to get the stalks out? If so what do I have to do to get it done? I have both columns ready for swaps, just need to swap the stalks and barrel over. Seriously guys I have done the tendons in both my knee's almost 2 weeks ago and was working on them till this Tuesday and am in alot of pain, but with no wheels I am stuffed with 3 kids.... so any advise to make the job easier would be a HUGE help. I am using a bolt extractor tool to remove the barrel bolts, just have never done a clock spring and my " manual on cd" doesnt cover this job so I am in the dark. It covered removal of air bag and column and thats it. |
