Straight above the accelerator pedal . . . . .

XH I's run an EF BEM (different colours though), dunno 'bout XH II's.

No probs - IIRC it's held in by 2 x 12mm bolts. I'd say XH II runs an EF BEM like the XH I's. I'd say you'd find it easier to get an EF mid series BEM (blue), swap the circuit board into your existing BEM case, and reinstall it - a straight plug and play. High series will need different plug wired, and for extra features (power antenna/LCD/button lights), may not be worth all that effort, as compared to the extra features of the mid series to your current low series installed item.

I was reading the tech docs on the bem and im thinking maybe my car already has a mid series 1. im thinking this due to the fact my interior lights have the fade out function. Can anyone confirm?

BEM means Body Electronic Module and it runs a lot of the car's elctronic features.

As you'd know, your van is a GLI fit as std, so the lights would simply switch off after 20 secs or so, if they fade as you describe, then it would be safe to assume it is a mid series type. Possibly you have the adjustable intermittent wipers (with the 'ring' adjuster on the stalk) as well, not just the single position type. Maybe the XH II panos came out as std with a mid series BEM, as opposed to low series in the XH I panos.

Does the high series BEM control the trip computer and climate control?

Yeah, I'll have to take some happy snaps sometime. I retained the same door trims. Filed, sanded and grey sprayed Fairmont rear door switch surrounds and fitted them along with EF Futura switches to the doors, so they look like part of the trim.
The console switches are fitted below the front of the console lid - again Fairmont door switch surrounds filed/sanded sprayed grey, with black switches (with the 'U' and 'D' on them).
Motors are of course XF Fairmont Ghia, using my XH regulators (the XF's were shagged), with the XF motor arm fitted.

Does the high series BEM control the trip computer and climate control?

no, both those items are independant of the BEM
