Well, not literally
I was cleaning my car the other day, naturally the outside was all nice and clean so I thought I'd attack the interior with some windex to clean up the interior glass (which was noticable dirty) I directly sprayed the plastic covering the cluster, and as it was drying, I noticed the inside of the plastic of the cluster was weird. Hard to describe, but it's almost as if water is trapped and stuck on the plastic on the inside. Kinda like it's foggy. How do I fix this? Do I have to rip the plastic bit off, and give it a proper wipe over and put it back on? If so, how do I remove the cluster enough to take out the plastic covering? Thanks |

I have had this problem with other clear plastics and it is caused by the chemicals in windex (ammonia?) attacking the plastic. Didn't bother me too much when it happened as it was not the plastics lens on the instrument cluster and i didn't have to look at it all the time.
Although i haven't tried it on the instrument cluster lens, one possible way to clean the 'fog' may be to use 'plexus' plastic polish available from Burson auto parts at around $10. Remove the cluster and then remove the lens from the cluster. Rather easy with an EF but don't know what type of car you own. Just remove the dash surround (6 screws and a 7 plugs to disconnect) and then the cluster (4 screws and 2 plugs to disconnect) and then remove the lens by carfully pusing on the clear plastic clips around the perifiry (sp?) of the lens. Spray with Plexus and polish with a clean soft cloth and then reassemble everything. QED Plexus works well on most clear plastics including scratched sun glasses. It is also the prefered polish when doing the final polish after sanding the crap off the EF headlights (using very fine grit sandpaper). Cheers |

If its been caused by the ammonia in windex, then anyone else considering cleaning their cluster, use a non-ammonia type window cleaner, such as Armorall glass Cleaner. Better for cars anyway as ammonia will also destroy window tinting.
