I am preparing myself for a battering from all you people who wish they had the woodgrain in one piece, but anyway, As i am putting a T5 into my LTD, i didn't want the "poverty pack" look of the Grey plastic console surround, so i spent many hours crafting this with my Dremel. It is not quite finished as you will see it needs a bit of tidying up around the edges, and the rubber boot is just a temp measure as i know an upholsterer who is making me a custom Grey leather to match my trim that will come up over the edges like a lip effect. As for the small hole where the auto "power" button used to be, i will be covering that up with a small chrome rectangle with the shift pattern on it and also a ford logo.
So here are the pic's, please share your views, btw this was my spare panel, so i didn't feel that guilty....sort of. Pic's all uploaded now

Hi,
Looks great and its not even finished yet, well done. Does that wood pattern match that of whats in the car? Perhaps some "before" and "after" shots are inline. Regards, Mick

Regards, Mick It is the factory woodgrain out of the LTD, i took the auto plastics off and mounted the manual base to it, then outlined it on the bottom of the woodgrain, and cut it out, so it looks like its original but technically it is original, converted into manual. Will get some before shots. Holy s**t was that stuff hard to cut out, funnily enough i dont think it was meant to be modified as it was literally super super glued to the plastic base, and then the metal seemed like it was made out of titanium, i went through 4 cutting wheels on my Dremel. I'm pretty happy with it, just need to finish sanding the edges and then get the leather one on it, although i do quite like the rubber boot as it looks original.

And i'm glad you said that about the wood being superglued to the plastic base as I was not sure whether the wood I have was factory or just the stick on variety. But my pieces have the same metal below the wood as shown in your pics....so I guess even the factoey bits are "stick-on" to a degree as you pointed out in my build thread. I haven't actally seen original pieces from a DC with my own eyes, so I didn't know. This other piece you mentioned, is it the same colour as the one you modified??? Cheers, Mick

Cheers, Mick Yeah they are heavily stuck on and then they have those little metal pins that you can see sticking through the plastic, stuck into the base. My other piece is slightly darker and more woody, i did not want to cut that up. I'll post some pics of mine for you when i un-cover the car

The thieves at customs in Auckland still have it, i am waiting on the letter from them that tells me how bad my bank account is going to get hammered before they can release it for postage. No doubt MAF will have their hands open too, and i'm sure some other companies will think up some tax to tax me. I had to pay $367 in duties when i imported my 50 cigars. So i'm dreading my gearbox cost. Did his EA not come with an LSD? Everyone needs an LTD i tell you, standard: alloy driveshaft, LSD,leather blah blah. But yeah i am happy with the console!

Unfortunately, mine's stick on, but with some reworking, IMO I think it's improved.

I like all the custom buttons and clocks etc you got goin on there, very neat. Stick on just aint the same is it, looks and feels very different. But that looks good, i like it

OMG, Snap. That's just takes the cake That's bloody brilliant - NF or Fairmont EF climate control chopped up like that, good thinking...!
I was once involved with a container with a few boats inside being imported and even tho we knew the customs agents we still lost about 10% of total value to the buggers... |

Yeah, thanks fella's, unfortunately, there's no factory woodgrain for XH's.

Damn man, on closer inspection, i like that climate control even more, that really is top s**t right there. I reckon you could build those and sell em to XH or XF owners. That looks factory, If you weren't in the know with Falcons or even XH's, i swear no one would no any better. I had to look twice, maybe even three times...

It took a while to build, so for production, it wouldn't be a profitable proposition. viewtopic.php?t=31543 The other things you can't see, like blend door motor, vaccy solenoid, don't sit in their default positions. I've seen a couple of XH's with EF/EL Fairmont dashes, so the CC unit remains factory, but the heaterbox components still have the same issues as mentioned above. They do look good, but I prefer my setup, AFAIK no one has built a unit like mine - and the system works correctly in every way - XG's and earlier would need the EBII/ED climate, as it needs no data line from the EEC ECU.

Snappage old mate, I was going to ask you why why didn't chop and change the EL trip computer too, but think I have actually asked you this before? Cannot find / remember your answer, so am now asking again.....?!......
Not that I'm saying there's anything wrong with the way you've done it.... Of course not... It would be a reasonably simple equation to start with TWO trip computers and use half the circuit board for the buttons and then wire in the other circuit board to supply the LCD display? (PS, love all your work Snap... When I win lotto you're near the top of the list for the free flight to NZ. I'll even supply a nice soldering iron...) Ah, bugger it. At risk of being called a thread hijacker and being hung at dawn outside FordMods HQ, I will withdraw the question and simply state "nice work on the gear boot surround Duno's brother..." |
