Hi,
i was told by my mechanic that my ute (XD 351 gas) needs a tune, and that its running really rich. This would have a big impact on my fuel economy true? he said its running really rich, its got a gas research kit and you can smell a strong gassy smell when you turn it off

gonna have to take it to gas place or somewhere they have an air fuel ratio meter they can put in exhaust and tune it bye driving it and making small adjustments all you can do to get it right, i have same prob and have yet to do anything about it lol.

Dyno time cost money.
When you get it running right, it will have more power, run smoother, have crisper throttle response, and be heaps better on fuel.

Way better running too rich that too lean, a mechanic i spoke to the other day told me its better for the engine to drive it hard as the excess gas which doesnt get burnt protects the valves and so forth
Sounds logial, wonder to what extent it is true Matt

Sounds logial, wonder to what extent it is true Matt not with gas mate, thats actually a proven recipe for valve recession, with petrol what you said holds, but with gas if it runs rich, it actually behaves the total opposite of petrol, rich on gas=hot, so rich gas burns up the exhaust valves. gas has to be tuned properly, rich or lean is bad, rich is not safe with gas, neither is lean. |

Theres a difference between rich and slightly rich!
The problem with gas is that most of the people who fit and tune gas, don't know what they're really doing. Yes lean is bad, very very hot, rich is also bad, very hot. You want it as close to lambda as possible, and when under WOT a bit richer. Go to the gas research website and download their tuning manual. It at least gives you target AFR's to work with. http://www.gasresearch.com.au/
