Hi guys, going to put my EF XR8 on LPG.

Was wondering whats the best kit for one, and how much I can expect to pay?

Does it cost more for a V8 over a 6?

Cheers

shouldnt cost anymore for a v8 over an i6. Your best bet is to go to a fitter and get a quote

V8 is usually a tad more, there are so many variables though, do you want a basic simple mixer setup or do you want injected?
As above, call a few LPG places and get prices, we can't quote you.

Im prepared to pay more for an injected solution.

I know I am going to have to call for a quote as far as prices go but I am more interested in hearing peoples experiences in regards to the technology levels and performance that they have encountered with different kits

Cheers

We just finished a conversion for BOSXR8, EF 5.0 ltr as it always comes down to $$ if your looking at the SGI set ups there around the $4 to 4.5K the air valve type is around the $2600 then you have to ask your self do I want to pay the difference to get aprox 10rwkw that you have lost ?? but if you can afford it definatly the SGI is the way to go, no throtle restrictions & any mods you like to the engine & with our system it dosn't switch back to petrol on hard throtle as most of the others do, but shop around & ask questions especially the type of system that there going to use.

Gday,

I converted my EL V8 to LPG (dual fuel setup) with a sprintgas system, OMVL converter etc. Cost $1600 in parts and was good, but a little bit of power loss over petrol. I ended up getting ahold of a 3.45 diff and that made up for the difference in power and also gave it more grunt on petrol. Needed to change the gear in the sender unit too so the speedo was correct.

Economy was around 400-450km out of a 68L tank of gas and changing the diff didn't really affect the economy on gas. Less effort to take off etc. I think it revved at about 2100rpm at 100km/h and 1950 before.

I'd highly recommend it as you'll save heaps of bucks in petrol depending on how much driving you do. At the time I only had to do 13000km to pay the conversion off. It was quite a tidy conversion too and I mounted the converter upright behind radiator overflow. Could still get to the spark plugs easily. Some conversion mobs remove the washer bottle and mount it there but i didn't want to go that way.

Depends on how much money you want to spend but if you were really keen you could get the twin gasresearch carbies and spend quite a few thousand dollars and run it on straight gas.

hope this helps

Im looking to get the best result I can for as close to the $2000 rebate.

You installed this yourself?

Cheers,

Dane

Hi Dane, Yep I'm a licensed gas fitter but only got the license so I could do my own and families cars, not to make money out of it. A few years ago it was a 2 week course from memory and about $400

Also unless you go to a highly reputable Gas Conversion business, half of the installers are cowboys, so be careful. At least doing it yourself you can take the time to make everything perfect.

It might be worth paying the "standard" price of about $2200-$2500 and going to a reputable installer, and then you get away with an excellent conversion for less than $500, which will pay for itself in no time.

Thanks mate for your very helpful input

So I am assuming you did quite a lot of research on the different systems out there, considering you went to the expense of doing a course so you know how to fit it?

No worries at all,

Most of my knowledge on the different types of conversions came from speaking to lots of people and finding out their experiences with the different types of gear.

The sprintgas/OMVL setup was the best value for money and also had high reliability. Some people think the OMVL converters run too lean but I haven't had any problems. IMPCO gear is good but tends to not be as economical, but only by about 50-80km per tank. The sprintgas mixer does restrict the intake by about 30% and there are better mixers out there but they come at a price.

Just speak to a few more people and get their thoughts and then you'll probably have a better understanding.

cheers

No worries mate, Im pretty happy with the info I am getting from you.

As for the mixer, do you know much about what other options there are and how it affects power, economy and price?

Cheers

Mate I've only used the sprintgas mixers, but you can get larger mixers which are the same internal diameter of the throttle body. I believe IMPCO make them.

You;'d probably get better economy with a light throttle, but better power/worse economy with a heavy throttle.

HTH... cheers

I spoke to some people regarding getting the donut tank installed into my spare wheel well, they had to measure it (not sure why as I would have thought there would have been a part number or something that would be easily found) and he informed me that the top of the tank would protrude from the top of the wheel well by about an inch or so and would cost an additional $400.

This is disappointing to me, as I dont see why choosing a different tank which is more suited to my purpose should add to the cost so significantly, and also why there is no tank designed to simply fit under the wheel well correctly?

Thoughts on this?

Cheers
