Now since this new section just popped up I just had to whore a post on here. Anyways H3AT, one of my other mates and I were planning on slapping together a dodgy electric car. We have half a shell (my battered EA) and we have the motors (I think 2 x 9" not too sure).
All I need is the power control thingy ma bob (don't know what it is called) that is needed to keep the juice flowing evenly and won't blow anything up and also of course the power source. Though I am not really a total noob with electric motors and electricity in general, I need more info on what is needed to get one of these running and also what precautions and specs of motors, batteries and off the shelve equipment. Keeping in mind this is a low cost project...if it fails I say OH WELL. And yes I have had thought about getting a smaller car shell though I can't find one just lying around while I have the EA for free. I have read the one about the 2 x 9" motors in the 180XS or whatever it was pulling good figures on the dyno... though it was a lighter car and had more money spent on it. I don't want this project between us 3 to cost us an arm and a leg. Most little things such as wiring and stuff can be found in my garage or H3AT's house. So not much money going to be spent on screws wiring, switches, brackets and such. Anyways any help would be nice =D phong =P~

i think no matter how you go about it it'll be an expensive project.

OH SNAP!!!....batteries will be the most expensive thing =( Remember...so long as it moves forward at a reasonable speed we'll be happy.

Then again I don't even know how many I need. Marine batteries are going for like 200 or something. Given that each battery produces 12V and I need 240V I'm going to need 20 batteries...plus maybe 5 more for the sake of it. That comes to over $4000. If anyone has spare batteries that may still work after some charging...that would be awesome... I already have one HAHAHA...thats at least another 19 to go. phong =P~

ahh a few lead accid car batteries will be fine
might weigh a bit... or u could get a few hundred nimh AA's and make a few packs, there is a car in europe with this setup and runs for about 2hrs irrc but has regenative braking

Anything that can be done for cheap will be done...but batteries has always been the main problem for electric cars...too expensive and too much money. I reckon I should just get a whole lot of lemons and copper coins and make my own batteries HAHAHA phong =P~

Hey mate,
I have been doing quite a bit of research on these electric cars.. particularly the Hydrogen Fuel Cell powered beasts.. So i hope i might be of some assistance.. Just a few quick things to bring up.. * What voltage and wattage are your motors? * Do you have any torque, rpm, etc type specs on them? * What kind of drive were you planning on? * How do you plan on charging the batteries? Seeing as this car is just an experiment i would imagine you aren't expecting much of a result.. I have a couple of contacts who have created electric cars for themselves.. One of them in a Old School Mini Cooper.. So i can squeeze their brains for info too.. I will keep an eye out on this thread for sure.. Cheers, Nik |

Cheers nik =D I haven't even seen the motors myself :S...but lets just hope they are not 3 phase motors at 340V cause that would cause more problems.
Yeah I know a fair bit about Hydrogen Fuel cars....the only problem is supply of Hydrogen (pretty damn expensive) and also the Hydrogen storage containers. Being a nanotechnologist I had to look into different methods of hydrogen cells and the best way was through new materials such as carbon-nanotubes which are light weight and can with hold a lot of pressure. So yeah it is interesting but requires a few more years of research. phong =P~

ummm dude! car batteries are DC, 240V is AC Just a bit different! u can get an inverter u could get an electric generator get 3 phase ran to your place an a huge extension cord mite turn our cheaper

hey phong...i work on electric motors...
let me know wat u want to know and maybe u can help you!! for instance....depending on voltage and frequency that determines wat speed ur wheels will spin.... ie...in australian stanards...the quickest a motor will turn is 3000 rpm cause of the voltage.and frequency....u can alter this by ising a varible frequency drive by up to whatever...but u have to make sure that the bearings adn the rotor are capable of these speeds..otherwise...u will destroy the internals of the motor... also depending on wat power...and torque you are dependins the motor to out will depend on the acceleration and torque you get..
