Hi
I have a strange problem with my el 4litre fairmount, the converter freezes after about 1/2 an hour of driving in very hot weather. Does not do it in the morning going to work, but does it coming home. Thermostat and radiator cap are new, cooling system is good and clean, no overheating problems, not loosing any coolant For in to freeze means there in not enought coolant going thru it, so what makes the coolant flow thru the heater / converter circuit when the thermostat is open? I assume the converter is connected into the heater hoses between the back of the of the water pump and the bottom of the thermostat housing, have not had a good look at it yet, Any suggestions please |

I'd bet you didn't purchase a gas thermostat did you?

thermostat was fitted by same place that did conversion 3 years ago and I am very happy with their work
please read post , re how is converter piunbed up |

You said thermostat is new but? Not 3 years old?
Where does the convertor pick up the water from? All than block it is some in that circuit... It's usually in the bypass circuit... So comes out the steel pipe off the thermostat housing runs to the converter and then from there back to the water pump... Not much can go wrong... Either it is the wrong thermostat, the steel pipes are full of corrosion (in which case you wont get a hot heater), the converter is blocked up and shagged, or something else is amiss... Cheers, Tim

Conversion was done 3 years ago, thermostat was changed at last service in December 2013
Shurley if the pipes / converter were blocked it would play up all the time, not just in hot weather I think I am looking for the something else |

Pull the thermostat back out and check it and make sure it's right... So it wasn't the one that was put in 3 years ago which worked fine... If it's the wrong one when it gets hot it blocks the bypass off and your converter freezes...
Until you check the obvious I can't offer any other solution... You can look as hard as you like to blame something else... The fact is it's a water flow and like you said it can't be blocked... What else changes when it's hot? Has it only been happening since said "service"? Sure the service wasn't done by an apprentice who can't tell the thermostats apart? Cheers, Tim

I checked the thermostat last night and compared it to an old one I have and can find no obvious difference
Correct me if I am wrong, but as I see it when the thermostat is closed the coolant flows around the bypass pipe behind the water pump thru the converter, hopefully, thru the heater piping and heater if open , back into the base of the thermostat housing and around the engine. When the thermostat is open the inlet into the dase of the thermostat housing is closed or restricted and all or most of the coolant flows thru the radiator At normal amdient temperature everything works fine, with normal coolant temperature, about middle of normal range where it has allways ran, so I assume all the associated plumbing is working ok I am only having a problem with the last 2 very hot days where the coolant temperature is a little higher, but not too high. Could the thermostat be opening a little more with the increased heat and completly blocking the base of the thermostat housing inlet / outlet and stopping flow to the converter? |

Yeah you're sort of right but it flows the other way...
Comes out of the thermostat housing and enters at the back of the water pump... All I am saying is that per my comments in the thread I linked, if you have a gas vehicle the thermostat MUST NOT HAVE the extra pin, spring and plate on the bottom of it (again photos are in the thread I linked) if it does it will completely block the flow through the core and in your case the converter... If you have checked and are sure it doesn't have the extra bits on the bottom of the thermostat then you need to get converter checked because nothing else can be causing the problem... Cheers, Tim

thermostat. common issue with gas cars. people don't put gas thermostats in. thermostat opens further in hotter conditions and blocks flow to the heater pipes, which is usually were people plumb the converter lines from

Update on my converter issues
Had my car checked by a gas mechanic I trust, he said my radiator is partly blocked and that reduces coolant flow thru the converter as it heats up. The indicator is the cas mixture gets richer as the engine heats up, I noticed the car does not go as well when it heats up. I will replace the radiator and see if things improve |

First post said your cooling system was all good and clean but? How does he know it is part blocked? Did he take the side tanks off and flow test it?
If it is blocked with insects the other way you clean it with compressed air... Make sure you clean the condenser too... Have you tried putting the correct thermostat in it yet? Cheers, Tim
