just wondering how empty can you let your tank get until the engine stops or starts spluttering?
my EFII wagon has a APA A90 litres tank (72L useable). its got a 2-176ohm sender unit in the tank but ive also added a 10ohm resistor in series to make it the same as the factory fuel tank sender unit near empty but its still not right. At the moment i drive until the needle on the gauge is dead on empty and the trip computer says 20 distance to empty but when I go to fill it I can only put 57litres in. Im going to install a resistor in series with the fuel gauge but im not sure how far i can push it. Im running straight gas so I can't run out but I'd like the tank to be nearly empty when it says empty. i thought 5 litres remaining should be safe. any suggestions? |

it can have 150mL in it and still run lol, albeit on idle only, floor the pedal and it just dies

Yeh, Why run it to empty? do you like water rust and other s**t in your lines?
Usually on a Gas car you could get to about 7 or so liters.. however you won't be able to load it, Idle will be fine for the remaining vapour. My old ute used to whistle when there was no gas left but if this happened I'd fill it up.

Between 520 and 550km (100L tank-85 usable)my V8 starts to whistle and thats when I usually fill it up, wouldn't know how much gas is left in the tank, not enough to floor it but coasting and idling it will.

I had my car's DTE meter saying 2kms for about 5kms LOL
would drive at 60, put foot down and it would splutter....

i never knew about the whistling. ill remember that for sure.
I just want to get more km out of my tank. im not worried about rust & s**t in my lines etc, i had my tank retested and cleaned out about 10 months ago and my gas system is all brand new. its just that when i fill up my gauge says empty when ive really got 14 litres left. id rather use all the gas in the tank so when i refill i know its all fresh. i wasnt sure that the pickup in the tank would pick up every last drop. and as i said earlier, i can let it run out, its gas only, i don't have a petrol tank at all. |

the pickup wont pick up all the gas, it sits slightly above the bottom, "fresh" gas???? gas doesn't go off, you want some gas in the tank to keep the pressure up, when you get down to the last bit it cant boil off enough to maintain pressure, might not be a concern tho unless your making power.
you really only have one option, work out how many average Km's you can do once you get on the red bar, and just keep that in mind when your driving, like say do 50km after it says empty, creep up on it in 10km intervals or something, and once you start fitting more and more gas in, you'll get a feel for it. just because it's supposed to be XX useable, doesnt mean it wont take more, or less, the AFL's dont all behave the same in my experience. |

my tank usually takes about 65 litres tops, thats with it whistling.
i used to get 460 on the hwy out of gas and 400 around town with it.

i've ran mine to 11 dte on trip comp, got 600km out of the tank in doing so.
as long as the car dont splutter, you wont wreck anything by running it for a bit with the fuel light on. the fuel pump should never run dry though. people often say you'll pick up s**t in the tank - the fuel line sucks whats at the bottom anyway, and once you do it once, it would have sucked any crap that may have been in the tank, which then will end up in the fuel filter. so dont listen to them. i replace my fuel filter fairly often.

My dad told me and i have noticed, the gauge is no reflection of how much gas is in there at all, i have a 90L tank (72useable) and i can do 100km's with the red light on and still only be able to stick 62-65Litres in. 65Litres gets me 550km's mixed driving if i am behaved, thats with 25thousand km's on the plugs and 60 odd on the leads Matt
