Hi All i have a EF wagon on gas and would like to install another tank i have here its complete with everything out of another car in fact the whole system was only 7 months old but only need the tank and have gone through the pages about installing another tank and other than saying you need a hydrostatic valve theres no much other information
What i would like to know is how to connect the two tanks in series so when i fill from my exsisting filler it fills both tanks and how to connect the second tank as well. I cant seem to find any info on what this Hydrostatic Valve is? can any one help a diagram would be great if anyone has one. Thanks Alan |

Will be required to be got from the gas shop.
The hydrostatic valve goes in as a t piece between the 2 supply lines from the tanks to your motor. It will allow the tanks to drain off equally until one runs out of gas and then it will close off and just run off the tank with gas remaining. Fill lines are just T pieced from the filler to the tanks. The tanks individual AFL valves will control the rest. One tank will cut off first as you are filling and the other will keep filling until the AFL on that one is activated.

Pretty much what evl098 said but mine didnt empty the tanks equally.
Depending on the time of day/weather/which side of the bed I got out of 1 tank would empty first before starting on the other. Sometimes it would start on 1 tank then switch and completely empty the 2nd before going back to the first. |

Slightly related question.
If you have two tanks and two convertors, can you just run one line from each tank to each convertor? I could see there being an issue if one runs out before the other. BenJ

BenJ Well yeah you could but the mixtures would be erradic with differing tank pressures etc. Much better off running a 4 valve tank and two supply lines.

Still need info on installing the second tank as to how to connect it ? |

2nd tank will probably require an engineers certificate.

Well actually no you havent explained it, I want to put a second tank in both tanks have filler plugs and a exit point as well and other than saying a t piece goes in it explains nothing. I assume the exits pionts (where gas comes out and goes to converter) may be where the t piece goes in ? but what do you do with the second filler plug or does the first tank fill through the exit point and fills into the second tank? And on the second tank there is some wires and a fitting that has a couple of wires on it do they still get used? |

Hi Fill line can just have a T-piece in place of existing elbow and new line made to connect to fill point on new tank. The supply line needs the hydrostatic valve and it is a T-piece with a one way valve in each line that goes to each tank and a pressure relief valve in the line to the engine, what it does is let gas out of each tank but not back into the tank. i.e. if both tanks were filled and one tank gets a bit hotter than the other without a hydrostatic valve liquid lpg would be pushed from the hotter tank to the colder tank overfilling it and if it vented it would release liquid lpg which would expand 270 times in volume and make a very large explosive mixture! NOT GOOD Cheers MD

Considering a 2nd tank will have to be mounted in a non standardised location, with custom brackets and lines, im pretty sure an engineer will need to sign off on it. A good gas fitter should be consulting an engineer before undertaking the job also.

Thanks Ash for taking the time to explain it better, no wont worry about having a engineer sign off the only time i get pulled over is when iam speeding lol, but should be good till the car dies I was going to use the one i bought around 6 months ago but have deceided to use the one out of the sedan iam wrecking and will sell the other complete unit.
I will probably make a start of it on the week end and take photos of it along the way for other dummies like me who havent done it before. Thanks Alan |
