p.s. i assume the filter is not reuseable, so where do i get a new one (part no?).

p.p.s. i have been informed it could be a tear in the diaphram inside the convertor is this a possibility?

Yep turn the gas off at the tank and run the car as you said. I crack the fuel line to make sure there is no gas in the system. You'll find an oring under the bolt and around the top of the bowl so be careful of those. Then either blow the filter out or replace (better option) and give the bowl a cleanout.
