Hi all
I am looking at converting my nl fairlane to run on the Eflex fuel (E85) basically i plan to put in a kit i have got a quote on the kit and i also got a quote from a performance shop to install a computer and change everything over. the guy selling the kit (who ended up actually saying he doesnt have any and gave me the details of his supplyer in the us and told me i could get it cheaper there) said his kit just connects in between the injecters and the computer and makes the ajustments needed to allow the car to run on E85. the guy at the performance shop said they are crap and said i am better off putting in a system that costs 6 times what i payed for the car ($6600) Both claim to provide a performance boost of up to 30%. The guy at the performance shop said i will have a switch to cut between E85 and unleaded but i will need to either drain the tank or run out of fuel before swiching. (this system sounds more like what would be put into a race car or a drag car.) the guy selling the conversion kit for the injectors said the cars existing OEM computer makes all the decissions with his system, his system just increases the amound of fuel being put in to the cylender as the fuel map on most existing computers are not calabrated for such a high ethenol content and all his does is makes the ajustments. from what i can tell with the more expensive setup i need to replace the fuel pump, hoses, injectors, fuel rail, add an aftermarket computer (i fear this will remove some features too). the cheaper setup just needs this plug and play unit put on to it. i am also getting conflicting reports as to what damage this will do to fuel lines and what not. some say none and some say it will destroy the car. i can not think of anything more corosive and harsh than petral, so how can ethenol be so bad for the car? has anyone done this successfully and what damage is it doing or performance gain has come from it? a more cost effective way is to buy a j3 chip for your factory ecu, buy 36 or 42 lb injectors, high flow fuel pump and just replace the rubber hoses from the tank to the fuel lines and from fuel line to engine with e85 compatable hose, steel lines and fuel rail will be fine providing the car is driven regularly and doesn't sit around allowing moisture to set in the fuel..
then you need to get it dyno tuned unless your confident to do the tuning yourself... I know of a few falcons running e85 and that pretty much all they have done... but if you only want e85 because of the price you also got to consider that your engine will need approx 30% more fuel so imo the costs are negligible .. |

yeah i know fuel costs will be about the same in the long run (unless petrol goes up a lot) but the people selling the conversion kit said pumps and fuel lines do not need changing and it is designed to operate with the existing cars ECU.
but from what you describe that sounds like the $6600 system that i was quoted on. the trouble is this car is not a race car or anyting and i want to be able to fill up at any fuel station in the absense of E85 without having to purge the tank. How do these J3 chips work? what do they do?

A j3 chip plugs into the buttom of the factory ecu. It allows you to change fuel and timing setting in the ecu.
A j3 costs around $250-300. Bigger injectors about $300. Fuel pump around $250. Then fuel hose around $60-100. So in parts your looking around $1000.. If your after more info on j3 chips and tuning there is a thread here for ti performance chips. They can help with setting up a chip.... |

ok i shall look into it.
however the compleate kit for the conversion is like $400 and does not need all that to be changed.

is it from aussie ethanol conversions??
read into it more... from what ive read its more for using e10 in std unleaded cars and e85 on flexfuel cars eg cars made to run e70.. this is from there site... faq, Can my vehicle run on E85 even if it's not an FFV? If your vehicle is not an FFV or a converted FFV, use of any percentage of ethanol higher than 10% is not recommended. The American Coalition for Ethanol believes it may be possible to use blends beyond 10% ethanol in standard automobiles and is currently conducting research on this topic. if your not after performance from e85 why not do lpg conversion?? |

No it is for converting non Flex fuel vehicals to run on E85. Eflex IS up to E85. that is why it is called E85.
there is no point converting a car that already is prooven to run on E10 well so it can run on E10. why would i spend a cent on doing that, i can fill up with E10 now and i dont need a conversion kit to do that at all. this if from there website. I agree. If hes not going for a performance gain there is no point in running it.
You will need to change fuel filters more often. You will need to change oil more often.. There is no cost efficient way to run it unless unleaded gets to $200 litre.. At the moment e85 is only 20c per litre cheaper than std unleaded.. . |

It is a cleaner burning fuel.
aparently will improve performance. better for towing. higher octain cheaper at the bowser (i know it will run out faster but it is less out of my pocket when i do fill up) and if not for any other reason, it is better for the envirenment

also i have been informed the V8 super cars run eflex. and further to that the only time they adjust the fuel percentages in it EG lower the ethenol content is in winter months to allow cars that run on it start easyer on cold starts.

It is a wonder fuel that I absolutely love. Those of you who know me know this.
You only need to upgrade your injectors to have 30-40% more flow, and replace any rubber lines with Flex fuel compatible high pressure line. Change your fuel filter and get it tuned. I would suggest getting a J3chip with multiple memory slots, so one for E85 and one for normal unleaded. You can't get it everywhere, so you need a contingency. Also, your motor will run cooler on E85, as it is as you said a cleaner burning fuel. This is where the benefit for towing comes in. If you want less running costs though, I would suggest LPG injection, although with current LPG prices, the benefit is not what it used to be. Good luck and keep us informed of how you go. Brett
