Heard a sad tale today. I was talking to a bloke at MED, who used to sell the Airod variable mixer, a nifty piece of gear that would open out as airflow increased (or something along those lines) thus being a lot less restrictive than the ordinary fixed venturi mixer. They had 10,000 made in 1994, which ran out about 2 years ago. Due to the advent of SVI, there isn't demand for that large a batch, but none of the foundries that can do the die casting will bother with a run of less than 10,000 (or so they say).
Anyway, I got thinking that a good percentage of those 10,000 would be sitting in wreckers now, and most wreckers wouldn't have a clue what makes them different to & better than the run of the mill gas mixer. So I'm idly thinking, how do you identify one of these, do they have any markings or branding on them, and what cars would they be fitted to? Joe at CMS has mentioned that these went well on EFI V8 Falcons, so I guess there'd be a few on Windsors in EB-AU wrecks. What else, Holden 5 litres perhaps? If anyone has any info that would help me canvass a few hundred wreckers , please reply or PM. Naturally I want one for myself, but if I can rescue a couple of dozen Australia-wide, I'll happily stock them for anyone who also wants one.

that was easy thanks google!
True to it's name, it is constructed so that air and gas passages in the mixer assembly change, depending on engine demand, thus providing stoichiometric gas to air ratio throughout the range. Superior in design and performance to standard "spud" style mixers. Features: • Enhanced drivability through variable fuel supply. • Economic running at cruise. • No flat spot or hesitation at acceleration. • Flexability of design allows multiple application. • Outer diameter = 72mm - 80mm I will make it a point to hunt out all the gas mixers at pick-a-part next time I am there. there was one in this ebay lot recently. I would'nt have wanted to buy all this stuff just for the one I wanted. I guess you could alway relist the ones you don't want individually.

My brother works in a foundry(in the Hunter) that cast stuff for the petroleum industry however there may be a patent on that bit of gear.
And for what it's worth, I wouldn't mind one of these on my V8. |

Rick, thanks for reminding me that a picture is worth a thousand words. I'm chasing up that ebay lot, maybe the buyer really wanted the one for the 202.... Did you search for that auction? What did you search on? I was searching for Airod or MED and got nothing... I can set up a saved search that'll email me new matching listings every day for 6 months.
Banarcus, if a foundry is willing & able to die-cast a smaller run, say 100, it might be possible to get some made up. MED won't stock 10,000 but might be willing to do a smaller batch. I can only ask them... It'll probably cost a fair bit more per unit to only do a small run, but then there is a $1000 - $1500 price gap between ordinary mixers and SVI.

I searched for mixers hoping someone would not know what they were selling so it would be cheap.
I am an Ebay junkie. I am looking for another product to start selling on Ebay. we used to sell craft items but there wasn't enough profit for the amount of effort. My wife has 1300 feedback rating

I would'nt have wanted to buy all this stuff just for the one I wanted. I guess you could alway relist the ones you don't want individually. I sent a message via ebay to the buyer, expressing interest in the Airod mixer on the off-chance that it wasn't what he bought the lot for. Here's the reply I got back: Quote: I primarily bought the mixers for the ones I can use directly on selected cars without much modification. The airod one isn't vehicle specific, and so it only interests me as a curiosity. If you want it is yours for $50 including express postage to anywhere in Australia.
It arrived this morning & I'm like a dog with 2 tails ATM! Thanks for the lead Rick, I owe you a beer or 10... I just don't get to Victoria very often, it's been nearly 15 years. Maybe I need an excuse It's a bit carbony and the slide is a bit sticky, so it could handle being pulled down, cleaned and maybe lubed a tiny bit. Will take some pics as I go along, but with some sunny days forecast for my long weekend off, I have a lawnmower to fix & use, a windfallen tree to cut up and so on. There may be a slight delay before pics go up and I have to think about how to fit it. I'm going to have to relocate my BOV.

I wouldn't mind having a close look at this mixer sly. Something like this is what I would need on my sprint gas equipped V8 wagon. Take heaps of photos as you go and a detailed before and after installation would be good too.

I might be able to do a little better than that as I am 10 minutes' drive from Kurri and have to go into the chainsaw shop in the next couple of weeks or so. PM me a phone number and I'll give you a call before I go in.

Here is the upstream (airbox) side:
And the downstream (throttle body) side: Here is the air passage fully retracted (closed up): And opened fully out: And again: As you can see, the mixer is around the same diameter as a 3" pipe: So it lends itself to mounting in these various ways... in the intake pipe for a custom intake or a V8: ...or up close to the throttle body in an EF - AU I6... ...or with a hose clamp in say a force-fed AU

BTW I got all PI R-squared a little while ago and ran some calcs of cross-sectional area of the Airod's annulus (being very careful not to leave any letters out...) compared to the 42mm fixed mixer I currently have. The Airod's air passage is a bit under twice the area of the fixed mixer, BUT the fixed mixer's opening has to carry both air and gas. In the Airod, gas comes out of the middle of the mixer on the downstream side, so the air passage doesn't have to carry gas. If gas displaces 15% of the air in the fixed mixer, then the Airod effectively has slightly more than twice the cross-sectional area of the fixed mixer.
Meaning, it should flow twice as much air/fuel mixture as the fixed mixer.
