Got a question regarding the gas tank safety solenoid.

When the electronmagnet part is disconnected, the solenoid should default to the shut positon and cut off supply yea? That has long been my understanding of solenoids.

The only reason I question this is I took my car in to get it checked and they said theres nothing wrong with it, even though I can still operate gas with the safety solenoid disconnected (the electromagnet part), also I never hear it click anymore.

One last thing the solenoid gets incredibly hot, is that normal behaviour?

If it doesnt click and you can always use gas when its supposed to be shutdown, I'd say the solenoid valve is jammed open. Maybe the electromagnet broke down or something happenned such as a short that welded it into the open position. Physically take it out and give it power to make sure its working right, if it isn't, replace it. With a partial short, there might not be enough current limiting causing it to get very hot.

This is as I suspected. I have no idea how the mechanic could possibly not pick this up even after I specifically said check the solenoid.

they can leak gas if you have the plunger in upside down. that might be worth checking. you won't hear a click if its upside down.
check the terminals across the solenoid with a multimeter. i think they are around 12ohms.
it should get pretty warm during operation, thats why they crack after a while.
