Any gains to be had with water injection when running on gas in my turboed dual fuel XH .It needs the water on petrol to delay knock.

Cooler intake temps, will kill some of the extra heat created from running lpg.
I just cleaned and fitted an old 'upper head lubrication system' setup and filled it with water At idle and at highway speeds you have the most vacuum (-0.6bar). My logic is that until the engine (the intake manifold in particular) is warm, the drip system wont vapourise properly. I am probably wrong but its pretty safe logic so i will stick to it until someone tells me otherwise. Last night i started off dripping it in, then i drove it for a bit with a constant flowing stream, no drips, probably more water than fuel, lol. Matt

Very easy, negligible benefits without having the timing advanced but its cool!

It's all new to me. Particularly with the way fuel prices are going every efficiency mod is damn good to know.

Can anyone explain the Physics behind Water Injection on a Petrol engine, and what they do?
My GUESS would be that adding a little water to the intake charge would vapourise, and help cool it down, to stop Pinging. Correct? Or Am I way off? |

Water can and does absorb an enormous amount of heat. When vapourised it happens much quicker due to the greater surface area enhancing availability.
I don't know whether the greatest effect is in the intake plumbing or in the combustion chamber.

The benefits are to be had in both the intake plumbing and the combustion chamber, cooler intake charge and higher compression (marginal and artificial due to the extra water in the chamber).
Plus your engine runs cooler, so less chance of a failed head gasket* and the carbon is cleaned out. *The head gasket thing may not be true, the alloy head may respond differently but it would be logical to assume its another benefit

In terms of protecting the head gasket, if you use the dripper to compensate for an otherwise unhealthy scenario involving more than normal heat, then it might offer similar head gasket duty to stock, not an improvement on stock.
How does the water vapour remove carbon buildup? I guess it could soften it, 'wash' it out. Water molecules are heavy so they hit and dislodge harder.

The steam cleans the engines carbon deposits, its widely noted on alot of websites so it must be true :/ but the logic works and my grandfather who was experienced in the field claimed the same benefits.
