jesus christ and I just bought myself a maverick on Petrol/LPG.
I work out that it would add 11dollars extra a tank by the 2015 tax level. That would almost bring the cost of it on par, or worse than petrol if you factor in how much you would need to travel the same distance. And people give me s**t for being liberal. Sucking it up now aren't ya? |

How else did you think they would get their money back for that LPG rebate scheme?
It's the same with rain water tanks...we give you rebate when you buy a water tank, but we will tax you later on for it in other means to make up for the loss. Government doesn't just give out money, they take it back one way or another.

Good point Phong... Fair enough too if you actually used the rebate to get the LPG conv. The system on my car is pre-rebate.

Sadly yes, those who had pre-rebate LPG tanks installed pretty much lose out. However, technically, you should be on top, because you didn't pay to get the LPG tank installed...so you will just lose a small amount compared to those who paid thousands to get one installed. By the time it's 2015...petrol willl probably be double in price.

Bahahah, this was announced years ago.
hardly a secret, and how surprising to see the opposition trying to put a spin on it. The Howard Government had announced plans for an LPG excise in 2004

when i got my car 8 years ago, LPG could be had for about 25cpl, IF that.
its averaging about 53cpl around here now. whats an extra 12 cents over 5 years? ULP will increase more then that anyway.

Why are people blaming Labor for a tax that was initiated by the Liberals?

You Aussies are still on the right side of the equation for LPG v's Petrol. Over here in NZ the automotive LPG industry rapes us by keeping LPG prices only marginally below the Petrol equivalent. They work as a legal cartel, with all 3 players equally owning the LPG purchasing company so prices can be set without fear of competition.
Currently our approx pump prices are LPG = NZ$1.25 per litre, 91 = NZ$1.78 per litre. At 75% the heat capacity the LPG works out at NZ$1.67 per litre petrol equivalent. Most motorists don't understand this, and only take the pump price for comparison, which the LPG industry is quite happy with. Our government has no interest in keeping prices low (or even honest), they make a % by excise tax, and then a % by GST. As the price rises, they make more money. Heck I could buy an ISO tank of LPG in Australia at your pump price, export it to NZ, pay the local taxes and still retail it below the current pump price. But of course I'd get squeezed out because the pump price here would miraculously be lowered by a "new deal" the LPG industry "had been working on for some time". Hopefully this makes you guys feel a bit better about your situation across the ditch.
