Just wondering if the pumps at petrol stations are checked?I took a 10L jerry can down there and filled her up, pump reckons 11.8L which seems like s**t to me, I did fill it past the 10L mark and after that you can't see the level, but it was lower than the breather hole and I just can't see an extra 1.8L fitting there... But anyways, got me wondering most people fill up around 50L, multiply that by the amount of customers, if a pump is out then a service station is making a fair bit of extra profit hey!
So does anyone know if there is any official checking done or what? |

there are weights and measures inspectors that test every (?) servo about every 6-8 weeks..... there's a slight allowance for overcharging, but as far as the weights and measures guys are concerned, if the servo wants to charge you for $5 of fuel but supply $10, the servo can go nuts!

they are checked very very often
there should be asmall tag on the pump telling u it was correct hell i have put over 70l into a 65litre tank figure that out.. it basically means that the tank is no exactly 65l and at what point is the 65l measured at? if u fill past the point of the 65l measuring point of course u are goint o get more in

i work at 2 servos and we have to make sure that we account for all petrol sold. on graveyard shift, we have to check the readings on the pumps which tell how many litred have gone through the pump, and dip the tanks so A we know how much petol we've got and if we need to order more in and B so that the amount remaining matches what we've sold.
on the pump, there shold be a little green sticker with some silver panels on it. the silver panels are stamped to say that the pump is accurate. (that's for tassie anyway!)

They do audit this kind of thing because i think you need a licence to sell fuel, yes?
Altho i think the last time shell was caught with out-of-spec pumps, the fines totalled a few thousand dollars. Pimple on the a** of a company making that much money.

Weights and Measures do a check and buy undercover
Only to places where complaints have been received tolerance levels are taken into account also!! I once put 130 litres into an almost empty 120 litre old beast!!!

yes it aint hard the filler neck will prolly hold 2-3 litres and a warmer day the plastic tank has most likley expanded a small part and the fuel bine underground and cold is more dense allowing more fuel in i have noticed i have got more fuel in on a warmer day than a colder day with the checking i cant see why the petrol staions cant have a small device in the pumps to fudge th readings with a customer and when the ppl that do the checks they tunr the devie off so it reads correct even if it only works out say an average of 1-2c per 30litres.... thats a HUUUGE amount off $

I've noticed my car will take 70L in a 68L tank even when I've got a little bit left. b**ch. It's not like they struggle to survive or anything
On the other hand, if you go to fill up do it in the morning or the coldest part of the day. Fuel is denser at lower temperatures, so you'll be getting a little bit more into your tank

I regularily fit much more than teh 68Litres I should, I only fill to the second 'click' and have on many an occasion gotten 72L in, and worst case ever was 74L.
Fuel in Europe is sold by weight not volume (litre), so the temperature of the fuel (making it 'bigger' when hot, and smaller when cold) doesn't matter as it's weight doesn't change with temp.
