Don't get me wrong, I have an incredible amount of respect for the guys that not only drive these cars but also build them. I'm a fitter and turner, and I can see the machining that goes into these marvelous creations let alone all the rest of it...
But I would love to see these cars be brought out to their full potential by using ford/Holden's top of the range blown v8's... Would be incredible.

I would love to see v8 supercars go old school rules and run standard cars from the factory , apart from added safety gear like a roll cage etc... Would be awesome to see them make silly little cars like the v8 torana or the big gtho again

Well that's a good point, it should be how it was...
Factory car, then do your best keeping key original features (eg engine block, etc) and let the best car win...

yeah....I'd love to see that too...but they DID try that and it wasn't very popular....Remember the end of Group C (think Johnson's Greenstuff XE) when they went to Group A? Group A's were pretty well factory cars with safety gear and a few bits and pieces and the punters stayed away in droves...to add to the injury the factory cars that were competitive weren't limited to Falcons and Holdens....Skylines, Sierras etc started winning and the locals were not happy. Remember Jim Richards calling the fans a pack of RS holes when his Skyline won - the red n blue armies booed him and he told them where to go. Fast fwd a few years and you have V8 supercars , not really anything like factory cars. The formula they have now is just about like watching slot cars - put your favourite bodyshell on and pretend its something like the car in your driveway.
If you really want old school racing, look at muscle car masters, appendix J(?) etc. Frankly V8 supercars are a bit boring if you ask me - I'd rather watch muscle car masters or even Targa events (I love going up into the Adelaide Hills and watching GTHO's etc blasting around like they were intended..)

I like the sound and look of the new v8 supercars, it has been a great year, lots of battles and close racing, I see your point though about racing actual street cars, remember the old saying win on Sunday sell on Monday,
Great post reminds me of the old days cheers

i will agree i would love to see some factory cars but they cant go back because they have to much money in it for all the people building the engines, gearboxes and axles etc... if the where to go back it would put all those people out of business. Do love the muscle car masters though

Attachment: File comment: Engine Data from "SUPERCAB" and "SUPERTOURUH" series v8_telem.jpg [ 60.35 KiB | Viewed 666 times ] Good old Shane posted this on Facebook a while ago. Is the engine data from AU SUPERCARS and NZ SUPERTOURERS around Pukekohe circuit in Auckland, New Zealand. Supercabs are the higher reving WHITE LINE. Supertourers are an interesting thing. The have bonnet vents as compulsory class spec' equipment. This makes them cool. They are also all based on the same roll cage / chassis. .... All suspension, driveline, and other interesting parts are no longer interesting - as they are all supplied as per class reg's and tagged with flimsy tags that are a dead give away if anything has been opened, altered or otherwise f**k with. Well, f**k. Greg Murphy just won the "championship" in a "Holden"... by "Holden" I mean it is a welded together thing with a Commodore style fibreglass bit on the front and back. They look like this... Quote: Technical
The 7-litre "small block" all aluminium, fuel injected V8ST control spec engine is not a product of a standard mass-production assembly line, but rather, hand built at PBC, [Performance Build Centre] based in MI, USA. Each engine is hand-assembled by a specialist technician, who personally signs off each engine he is responsible for completing. This "State of the art" facility is dedicated to crafting engines for speciality applications, such as our V8 Supertourer's Series, in an environment akin to custom race-engine assembly. Each engine is treated as an individual unit, and each is seen through the assembly process as the responsibility of a dedicated engine builder, whose name is affixed to the engine plate. The engines are subject to rigourous inspection and hot-tested in a 20-minute run cycle upon completion. In the development of the engine, a number of test engines had to survive 300 hours running on an engine dyno with a wide open throttle. The engines racing roots are also evident in the cylinder block and reciprocating assembly, where an extremely rigid aluminium block casting accommodates large, 104.8-mm-diameter (4.125-inch) cylinder bores, fitted with Hyper-eutectic alloy flat-top pistons. Lightweight titanium connecting rods link the pistons to a precision-balanced forged steel crankshaft with a 101.6-mm (4-inch) stroke. The Titanium con-rods weigh just 480 grams apiece - some 30 percent less than comparable steel rods. The wet liner, high nickel content cast iron cylinder liners, are torque plate-honed to exacting standard's to ensure optimum piston ring seal. The engine also features 5 axis CNC-ported cylinder heads to ensure both parity and optimum airflow. The cylinder head's also feature Sodium filled exhaust valves and lightweight Titanium inlet valves fed by tunnel-like straight intake runners, although large by production-vehicle standards, the inlet ports are designed to maintain high airflow velocity, providing excellent torque,507 ftlbs at a comparatively low 4,800 rpm and some 575 horsepower at 6,200 rpm. The 7-litre V8ST engine is complete with an inbuilt dry-sump lubrication systems that recycles the engine oil through an exterior oil cooler into a remote 12 litre oil reservoir and from there back into the engines oil galleries. The V8ST engine features its own unique accessories drive system, utilising a custom manufactured ATL front damper, and a single high performance serpentine drive belt. The heavy duty 100 amp alternator is mounted as low as possible to further assist the engine's very favourable low Centre of Gravity. The exhaust system is also unique to V8ST and adds significantly to the engine prestigious power output, whist still complying with New Zealand's maximum of 95DBA noise mandatory requirement. ENGINE SPECIFICATION: Camshaft: - Rocker-ratio intake: 1.80:1 - Rocker-ratio exhaust: 1.80:1 Degrees Duration: - At camshaft: Intake: 0.331 in. Exhaust: 0.328 in. - At valve: Intake: 0.593 in.
