He's very, very competitive, I mean under the big smile there's a very,
very fierce competitor." Mark Skaife "It's very motivating for me to race. I love the speed, I love the adrenaline." Craig Lowndes "When it became obvious that Craig was going to make it and be exceptional, motor racing drivers are pretty competitive, and it would be fair to say that Peter went through a stage where the green eyed monster came in." Bev Brock "I feel that the fans make motor sport. They are the ones that are behind the scenes, they are the ones that put the dollars in to buy the tickets to go to the events to see the drivers." Nat Lowndes "There's certain things that I wanted to do, but now I'd just rather be home with Nat and the kids and here, and be in one piece and enjoy life for what it is." Craig Lowndes AUSTRALIAN STORY March 5 8.00pm Tough, fearless and fiercely competitive, young triple crown motor racing champion Craig Lowndes' trademark has been his wide winning smile and easy going nature. He is the first driver to win the Australian Touring Car Championship on debut, the youngest ever winner and the only driver apart from Peter Brock to win the Triple Crown of Australian Motor Sport - the Australian Touring Car championship, the Sandown 500 and the Bathurst 1000 - in the one year. Lowndes inherited a passion for fast cars through his genes; Lowndes' father, Frank was in Brock's Holden Dealer team, when he won his first Bathurst in 1972 - two years before Craig was born. "Australian Story" goes behind the scenes to follow Lowndes during the final tumultuous months of his roller coaster 2006 season. The program also documents his meteoric rise through the ranks of Australian Motor Sport and the relationship that developed with the Brock family along the way. It details his intensely personal reaction to the death of mentor Peter Brock - and the loss of the V8 championship under controversial circumstances. The program also explores his life away from the track - where he pursues interests that contrast with the high profile celebrity status he enjoys on the racing and corporate scene. It is the first time an entire program has been dedicated to a motorsport personality. |
