as long as its only an option people shouldnt be worried..... a turbo 4 in a big barge of a car would be horrible. However, the dual clutch auto would be a god send, as they are great boxes. I assume theyre talking about the DSG gearbox or similar.

Nah i can't see it happing, as really the next big change ford falcon possible won't be a falcon at all be cause it will evolve into a front wheel drive american or english thing. a 4 cyl unless it is pushing decent power or is a diesal based motor with a decent torque out put into a 2tonne or 1 and a half tonne, other wise it would be a dog and then second hand car market will boom.

Only way they can stick a four cylinder in a falcon is to make it smaller and lighter.
Like the BMW 1 series. But then it will be cutting into the mondeo and focus sales. The falcon does not look healthy!

A front wheel drive 4 cyl. imo i think they will kill the Falcon name done the track but retain the whole xr6 / 8 names etc.

I'd actually like to see them play with supercharged 4cyl's.. more low down power would be what a 4cyl needs....
But a decent sized (say 3 litre) boosted motor need not be a really bad thing.. wasn't that long ago you could get a 4cyl commodore remember and that was NA. |

actually, what'd be really interesting is AWD falcons..
What worries me is that ford has a tendency to bail out of a market at the drop of a hat and then regret it later. The last time there was a energy crisis, Ford pulled out of V8's altogether (XF-EA) and lost a whole generation of youth to the holden banner as a result.. something from which they have still not recovered completely. If they turn the falcon into just another FWD 4cyl... then they will lose whatever cred they have left and might as well close up shop and just become an importer for Ford US. (and a small one at that) no more V8 supercars, and none of the exposure it brings.. they would die completely in au I suspect. What they need to do is make V8's and i6's that shutdown cyl's when they are not needed... same as honda and chrysler. That together with true camless operation is where the future lies. |

Sound like they're hinting. I reckon a 4 cylinder FWD will be imported from Malaysia/Asian region.
Its the way of the globalise. investors wins hands down regardless of gov bail outs. its just a matter of time before they ship all manufacturing offshore where there's minimal wages or should I say $25 per day... low cost for max profits.

the fact they chose not to go with the V6 duratec motor, is in itself the nail in the coffin.
is easier (and cheaper) for them to stick with the I6 for another couple years before the falcon is killed off.... |

But the falcon is still a top ten seller in AU and NZ.. why would they kill it off?
