Ford Australia has revealed the official fuel consumption figures and pricing for the Ford Falcon EcoBoost – the four-cylinder variant it hopes will help reverse flagging sales of its locally built large car.
Ford Australia today confirmed the four-cylinder direct-injection turbocharged engine returns official fuel consumption as low as 8.1 litres per 100km in the base model Falcon XT. Despite the new powerplant being half the capacity of the traditional, locally built 4.0-litre inline-six (I6) engine, Ford Falcon models powered by the brand’s 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine will cost just as much as their I6 counterparts when they hit Australian showrooms in April. The 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine will be available in three specification levels: the entry-level XT ($37,235), the mid-spec G6 ($40,835) and the luxury-grade G6E ($46,735). The Falcon becomes the first rear-wheel-drive vehicle in the world to be equipped with an EcoBoost engine. It scores a unique tune, producing 179kW of power (at 5500rpm) and 353Nm of torque (at 2000rpm). The EcoBoost is half the size of the standard 4.0-litre six-cylinder engine, yet trails it by just 16kW and 38Nm. The I6 engine produces 195kW (at 6000rpm) and 391Nm (at 3250rpm). Our Falcon EcoBoost prototype test drive late last year demonstrated the four-cylinder models were less than two tenths of a second slower than the I6 models (7.22 seconds vs 7.05 seconds). Intriguingly, the Falcon XT is the only model to return the 8.1L/100km economy figure, with the G6 and G6E models officially rated at 8.5L/100km. Ford Australia says this is due to the weight differences between the specification levels. Ford has not yet revealed the kerb weights of the EcoBoost models, although the differences between spec levels is expected to be similar to the six-cylinder range. The highly equipped G6E is 20kg heavier than the G6, which itself is 30kg heavier than the base model XT. The I6-powered XT, G6 and G6E, however, all return identical official fuel consumption ratings of 9.9L/100km and CO2 emissions of 236g/km. The Falcon XT EcoBoost emits 192 grams of CO2 per kilometre, joining the LPG-powered Falcon EcoLPi as the only Australian-made large cars to beat the 200g/km mark. The G6/G6E variants emit 201g/km CO2. The most fuel-efficient models in the Holden Commodore range, the 190kW/290Nm 3.0-litre V6-powered Omega and Berlina, use 8.9L/100km on the combined cycle. Australia’s other locally made large car, the 200kW/335Nm 3.5-litre V6 Toyota Aurion, uses 9.9L/100km. I guess they haven't worked out that if you sell a car you get money... Would that be the first aussie built car since the VH Commodore that was available with L4, L6 and V8 in the same shell?

Would make an alright second car for the wife or something... Though I guess for that sorta money I would rather just go all out and get a xr5 turbo focus and have that as a second car to my ute.

If you want to go fast, buy FPV. If you want Ford to continue to build a local Falcon, then cheer them on to cater to every part of the market from base model to luxury to performance.
