And why aren't the disks mirrored?

Sactly what i was about to say. Get this whoever runs this server to learn how to use RAID...

With the FM donations need to save for a nice raid setup instead of backups as such

i mentioned this before apparently hiring server space thats on a mirrored raid of some sorts costs an arm and a leg. unless someone want to set up a server like that with lots of bandwidth would prob be looking at 100 m/bit with the amount of trafic coming through here with people accessing the gallery etc. im sure the mysql (i assume) database that is the back end of fordmods is quite large these days as well.
i dont think its as easy as what it sounds folks

Which, to my knowledge, is what has been donated.

All revenue from donations and commercial sponsorship goes towards the cost of service we're using now. To find a servce which offers RAID1 or better will cost twice as much per month, we simply dont have that money. What we have now costs us an arm. To go RAID1 we'd need an arm and a leg :)

I'm a little confused about what si happening. In my experience there's two types of servers.

Rent-A-Server and Co-Lo Server.

Now a co-lo is charged on rack space and bandwidth, so you can run whatever the f**k you want fr hardware.

Rent-A-Servers are usually shared between sites, and the clients should not need to worry about hardware and backups as the _service provider_ does this.

What is FM running on, sounds likes it's a mix where you get the worst of both types.

As mentioned before, I have BIG contacts, if you want to let me in on what's required I may be able to find something better and/or cheaper.

You missed the all important 3rd option: Dedicated Managed server.

We have a whole box to ourself. We have full control over the OS, but no control over hardware.

Ah, so there's the worst of both worlds.

Could you not go to a co-lo arrangement. Fully managed dedicated, OS/Apps/Hardware.

Sure, however we dont have the capital to purchase the hardware, nor do we have the luxury of getting quicker hardware at no capital cost when technology progresses. Then add the cost of having someone else manage our private hardware is far more expensive than a company managing the hardware they provide. This would mean putting a co-located server (which we can't afford) into rackspace in NSW, which leads to bandwidth we can't afford :) Remember Fordmods started off in an Australian co-location environment.. bandwidth was 8c/mb!!

We have a server with 24x7 hardware and network support, which incurs no capital cost to setup, repair or progress with technolgy. We have full control of everything else. I can't really see how co-location would be of any further benifit, unless we could chose our own hardware config, which is available in the Managed Dedicated server market place. However, costs go up - again out of our price range. We've been with this current provider for 12 months, and while 2 dead HDD's is disappointing - we've had less than 24 hours downtime. Thats pretty good for the entry level Managed Dedicated server market.
