What modifications need to be done to the supra box to make it fit? This would be a good cheap way to get a strong box behind the e series.

W57 box is all Alloy, and written on paper to hold 190hp.
W58 is Alloy with steel sandwich plate standard and specification to 230hp. W57 shares same a*** as the W58, bar the 5th gear Most of us know these boxes hold 500hp no problems. My question is, what internals were upgraded? as I rebuilt mine and could only source higher spec'd bearings. Also, do you include the rear bracket that goes on the rear extension housing that then bolts to the cross member? also boosted 6's seem to have more torque than na' v8's, having experience what ballpark torque where these 600hp's providing? Pretty keen on using my spare 57 box, as I prefer the toyota over the T5 in our XG. willing to frieght? Cheers

image: W58 gearbox - note the steel sandwich plate
These boxes first appeared in Australiain 1984 in the 4 cylinder Corona. They were also fitted to Celicas and, obviously, Supras. Both 4s and 6s had exactly the same version, so everything said about using 4 cylinder Toyota 5 spd units applies to the Supra box. There was at least 4 ratios in them, starting with an extremely low 4.0:1, which was fitted to commercial vehicles, following by 3.7, 3.5 and 3.28. They have the same length input shafts as the other Toyotas and are virtually interchangeable with the steel-case. However, they do have a different bolt pattern. As is commonly known, these boxes are extremely strong. They're much stronger than a steel-caseToyota. Straight from a wreckers, this box will cost about $500, but a stripped and checked version is about $700. There is another, extremely rare and much stronger, version of this box that was fitted to a 3.0 litre Twin Turbo. Its about half as big again as a normal Supra but apart from that it looks the same. It has been known to handle in excess of 550HP with no difficulties. If you can find one, you'll have to pay something like $1500-$2000, but they are very rare. http://users.tpg.com.au/users/loats/tec ... boxes.html |

The 2 paragraphs refer to Supra 5 speeds. The first paragraph refers to the W series. The 2nd refers to the R154 5 speed. Its much stronger cousin which came with the 7m-gte.
The V160 is a 6 speed. That website says the w58 was only fitted to the following: 82-98 Supra (5M-GE, 7M-GE, 2JZ-GE), 86 Supra/Soarer/Cressida (1G-GTE), 82-85 Celica (US 22R-*) None of these are a twin turbo 3 litre. |

i am trying to sell the bell housing if you want to start a topic on supra boxes go ahead but don't use this thread please
the figure that i have used are not on paper they are figures from cars that i have owned previously with these boxes in them and have handle the horses fine so yes they say 190 hp but we all know that they hold more so the paper that has that written on is worth s**t |

with the supra box and this bellhousing where abouts is the shift positioned??
does it line up with the factory ford shift hole? or does it depend on the specific box?? also what about the position of the gearbox mount and any tailshaft mods required?..(other than the yolk) anyone that would consider this as a conversion would probably like to know about the above before buying the bellhousing... |

the bellhousing was used in a eb falcon with the w58 box with the 21'' inch shifter position and it came out of the gear stick console of the falcon and didn;t hit the console at all will included the xmember and the geabox mount to mount to the xmember in the price so all you would have to do is get a w58 box or the one i have but only have the 18'' shifter posi for this box as my dad needs the 21'' for his f100 you can get 4 diff position 18' 20' 21'' 21.5' hope this helps not sure on the tailshaft will try to get some info off my mate that owned the box before me cheers rick |

About the gearbox W58 Source : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_W_transmission#W58 It differs from the W57 in its fifth-gear ratio. This transmission is popular as a replacement for weak stock transmissions in other vehicles. It came in two varieties: the original found in the 1982-1989 non-turbo Supras, Celicas and Cressidas of the early 1980s; and the later version found in Mk3, Mk 4 Supras and Lexus SC 300s. Toyota lists a change from an alloy sandwich plate to a steel sandwich plate around 1989. The steel sandwich plate has some minor internal differences, and it is believed to be slightly stronger (some wider bearings, some wider gears, slightly different gear selection mechanism, etc.). In theory the all-alloy version of the W58 should be the exact same strength as any other all-alloy W-Series transmission. The steel plate version is considered much harder to find and worth approximately three to five times as much as an all alloy version. The ratios and bolt patterns remain the same regardless of the sandwich plate used. The W58 & W57 share the highest gearing and closest ratios (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th (direct)) of the stock W-Series transmissions. The ratio shift was accomplished by taking the W55 base ratios and changing the input shaft to intermediate shaft ratio by 7.9%, thus shifting 1, 2, 3 ratios higher by that amount. This also shifted the overdrive 5th gear higher by the same amount creating a wider and taller overdrive ratio. The W58 is sometimes designated as a close-ratio transmission however, in its stock form it does not meet all the criteria for a close-ratio box. Toyota engineers have shown favor to the W58 over the rest of the 'W' series by including it in so many models and even building a stronger version for higher powered applications. Ratios: First Gear: 3.285:1 Second Gear: 1.894:1 Third Gear: 1.275:1 Fourth Gear: 1.00:1 Fifth Gear: 0.783:1 Reverse: -3.768:1 |
