its a simple equation, the same as for the exhaust side, size the pipe for the power. thiner pipes provide better low rpm efficiency. fatter pipes provide better high rpm efficiency. in the middle sized pipes give the best midrange efficiency. its all about velocity and this changes throughout the rpm range. a small pipe at low rpm will provide good velocity, ie higher airspeed, as it draws a certain volume through the length of the pipe giving the vaccum more time to accelerate the air. but the drawback is once a certain rpm is reached the size of the pipe cannot cope with the quantaties of air being asked of it.
on the flipside a larger bore pipe, ie 3 inch, will see lower airspeed at lower rpm. you may see that it flows smoother without corrugated elbows, giving better throttle response, but negligable actual low rpm power increase. it is when demand is high, as in mid to high rpm that the 3 inch will shine a little, as the velocity of air matches the diameter of the pipe, making the best cylinder fill for that intake size. a no pipe system always makes more power/less torque because power is a factor of torque times revs, and no tb is at its best at the top of the rpm range, due to no restriction. it will produce lower torque down low because there is no piping with conductive vaccum properties accelerating the air at low demand levels. this may or not make sense as i have been drinking.

strange that they've not made a switch pipe that does both.. same way they did the BBM switch..
was the EF dual runner an attempt at this? |

sorry bit this is a for sale thread not a place for your opinions. but... the internal diameter of the 3" pipe is only a few mm bigger than the throttle body, and whatever loss of spead at low RPM is re-gained by the lack off turbulalnce in the mandrel bent pipe.
