Here is my stock handle and bolts with the rubber mounting pad and metal backing for it.

When I was using the stock handle (same as Timmeh, with the metal backing), I had trouble getting it to stay in second. It kept jumping back into neutral, but only when downshifting. Got the BPT handle, and all is now fixed.
All good.

Yeah, doesn't happen when engine is off and I push clutch in and shift, ...only when car is running.
A mystery really...

^^, a pretty good sign your clutch is on its way out..
you can get a bit more out of it, but what you will need to do when you want 1st, is actually got 3rd,2nd then 1st.. I had the same issue, then the clutch finally let go, the thrust plate was screwed.. sounds like you are going down the same alley as me.. how long has it been doing it? I got away with it like that for 4 months before I finally killed it.

I will be p****d if my clutch s**t itself becuase i haven't cained it at all. It could be to do with adjustment maybe Mark, where abouts does you clutch fully disengage, because mine doesn't fully disengage until my the pedal is about 10mm from the floor, and that's with the cable adjusted all the way out!

I got a Ceramic cushion plate clutch which is basically on or off ...makes low speed driving a b**ch. So I was planning to have my clutch modified anyway (strengthened pressure plate & large Organic clutch plate) to make it more 'daily-driveable' ...looks like this is my 'green light' for that one!

I think I've fixed the problem Kyron ...it WAS a matter of adjustment. Just screwed in the cable adjustment bolts 2-3 turns ...and all is sweet now. As you said, I think my problem was that my clutch wasn't fully disengaged with my foot pretty much flat to the floor ...and adjusting the clutch has now brought the disengagement point UP on the pedal travel. Apparently the clutch should be adjusted this way as it wears / beds in. Shifts are sooo much easier now, and the overall driveability has improved due to me not having to floor the clutch pedal to get full disengagement! Yeehar!

but then again i want a ba turbo! oh wait, you got one of them too bastard You can have mine for $25,000 (what I owe Fraud Credit). Yeah, I've put up with the pain-in-the-leg driveability of the EL for a little while now ...so ANY improvement is something to sing about!

I had a massive vibration in the XR8 after I fitted the short shifter. The rear stop bolt and nut where hitting the transmisison tunnel when under load.
I had to indent the trans tunnel a little and cut more off that plate. All is good now. |

Good to hear mate, you'de be surprised how much of a difference turning a nut a few times can have, but i guess you know now My cluch point is SO sensitive that ifmy drivers floor mat slips up underneath the pedals at all it's the difference between haveing a clean shift an not having a clean shift! But i have good news to report that after i had my shifter installed the other day it seems to be a bi easier! Has anyone noticed that the throw of these short shifters isn't incredibly shorter than the stock one? I played with a herrod one in my mates falcon and it's probably about 50% shorter than my one again

it isnt. the shifter goes from 3.6:1(original) to 3.3:1 for the Steeda whereas the herrod is 3:1. i've had em both and the herrod one isnt as user friendly in that i thought it felt notchier. between the shifter(and recently installed tweecer based injection) i took 0.6 of a second off my pb last night. i definitely have no complaints about the shifter.

You checked the price on a 'Herrod' short shifter For less then half the price, I'm happy with a slightly longer throw. Main reason I wanted it was for increased self centering to improve 2nd to 3rd. It fulfilled that job easily, feels a s**t better. If you want a shorter throw, use a shorter handle. More effort but. What handle are you using at the moment? The Tri-Ax was a bit tooo short for my liking, so I gave it to a mate for his AU. When I get around to I'm just gonna cut a stock shifter down and rethread it, so I can still use stock gear knob.
