These heads were only on the car for a couple of hundred k's. They came from the AFR factory with 50cc chambers which cost me an additional US$500 on top of the original price to get them (angle milled and with custom exhaust valves to get down to 50cc combustion chamber size) like that. As they were angle milled by AFR, all the intake ports and mounting faces (including bolt spot faces) have been corrected to suite all oem component (manifolds,etc.). On a 302 ci motor these size chambers will give you just over 10:1 compression. Perfect for our 98 octane pump fuel. I you you are lucky enough to get heads like this from the AFR factory, I am sure they would cost atleast $3500-$3800 new, as my stock AFR185's with the standard 61cc chambers and stock type valves cost me about $3000 new. So for these ones complete (including valves, springs, 10 degree retainers, rocker studs and push rod guides, etc. etc.) and valve lash caps I want around the $3000 mark OBO close enough The reason I am selling them is that I had an engine built up in the US (a 331 ci) and to my embarrasment (after I got the motor in and running I found that I could not put any timing into it with out it pinging its tits off) I ivestigated and found out that they have a different octane rating to us (they use an MON and we use an RON), and our 98 is only equivalent to there 87 . I had told the builder that we had 98 fuel so he built it to run on their best pump fuel which is 91 MON (I guess about 110 RON in ours). I worked out that with these size chambers and my deck-piston clearance I measured that it had about 11.5:1 compression, way too much for our 98 fuel. I then gave it a compression test & getting readings of about 195, So I ran some VPW racing fuel (at $120 for 20L), well a couple of drums as it went so hard just to confirm it was too much compression, and it was So I had to get new ones with bigger chambers (61cc) for my 331 to lower the compression (to about 10:1) to beable to run the beast on our 98 pump fuel, rather than the VPW stuff that costs about $6/L

wouldnt having your heads chambers opened up, or new slugs been a better option....they sound like great heads, and probably would buy them if I didnt just buy AFR 205's....

As these are 185's, i take it they have 2.02 intake and 1.6 exhaust valves, do you need to notch the pistons to fit these to a stock 5.0 bottom end

The difference between RON and MON is not a great as you think.
Thier 87 is equivalent to our 92 (regular unleaded) And our 98 is equivalent to thier 92 (premium)

I spoke to the technical blokes at all of the major fuel suppliers (Shell, Mobile, Caltex, ...) with regards to their 98 RON fuel, and was told that the MON equivalent figures were 86-88 MON. But who are they to know this, I guess they just brew the stuff

I investigated opening up the heads with AFR and they advised against this as even though they have a really thick deck, that 10cc was way too much material, maybe 3 or 4 would be doable. Come to think of it a lump of aluminuim 1x1x10cm is a large lump to come out of a small chamber. I also thought about the pistons as well, but searching through the range of those available I would have to down to well below 9:1 (and I was'nt planning on running a low boost blower ). Also it would have been impossible to sell a set of 2nd hand piston where as heads it aint that hard. I racked my brains about the different options for a while b4 making my decision to get new heads.

Brett Yes you will have to. I have heard that there are places that can do it without removing the slugs.

Last time I checked and it was'nt that long ago Hi-Performance World want about $3,000 for a pair (valve lash caps were'nt included in that price either, nor were they angle milled to 50cc chambers). They would be no good for your stroker thats underway anyway unless you wanted to have about 12:1
