hey peeps,
what does everyone run in the way of tyres and pressure when running the quater mile??? i have been runnning 215/65r14 kuhmo's dropped to 20psi and i am managing a 2.1 sixty foot time in the heavy a*** wagon, thats dumping it at around 3000rpm with a 3.27limo diff. any other tips and tricks to get off the line better?

i ran a 2.1 in my ute with 38psi in the rear and it launched quite well (255x40x17)
I usually put the front tyres up to their max to reduce drag that small bit. every small thing counts. my ef manual did best (2.2) 60 footer with 225/60/15 tyres with 38psi also. i will have to experiment with tyre pressures next time im up at the drags. Does the low rear psi hurt your top end speed as you cross the line yobbo?

dropping the rear tyre psi allows for more traction off the line
alowing the car to launch harder and improve ets i ran my 14.9's with low rear tyre pressures basically dropped em to 16-18psi before i left for the drags and then ran it liek that... then about 8 runs later when the tyres were well warm i got the 2 14.9's!

um i run 225/50/r16's
at about 35 psi and 2.108 60'. slip clutch @ 4000rpm. i dropped the pressure a couple of times on my other tyres and it didnt make much of a differnece. |

My street 255/40/17 I run 25PSI and get 2.1 60ft with no Gas, and on the street slicks 235/60/15 i run 22PSI and get 1.8560ft times On NOS. SO am happy. Any lower than 20PSI on street rubber is a waste as the centre of the Tyre Colapses and this puts too much stress on the Side walls.

dropped pressure doesnt seem to effect top end speed, if it does i would imagine it is a very small drop, i might head out to wsid soon and give terreriost ghia's street slicks a go, see how much i can drop the 60' time with them. but because they are such a tall profile i think my 3.27 diff will really hold me back with them on.

Havent been to the drags for a while, but I always dropped the tyre pressure to 25psi if I was running on 18's, or 18psi for smaller rims.
I have had the tyres come off the rims too many times - got paranoid about dropping pressures. This is a short vid filmed at the old eastern creek drags - and it shows a difference in your launch between a car that dropped tyre pressures (me) and a guy that said he didnt need to drop the tyre pressure (chrispy from fordforums) http://www.xr8chic.com/images/drags/edxr_mustang.mpg (

that vid shows nothing 2 different car like trying to compare apples and oranges...
But I believe in the schooling previously stated that under 20 psi is a waste as the centre collapses and the side walls are what end up doing the work, too much tyre distorsion.. all that good rubber you paid for in the centre of the tyre is not being used and side walls are s**t to drive on..

DC Todd - I disagree with you.
Both cars are RWD V8 Fords. The mustang SHOULD have kicked my a**, but he "knew better", and didnt drop his tyre pressures. After that run, he borrowed my tyre pressue guage, and dropped them, then dropped 3 seconds off his ET

i know this picture is of a holden, but, check out the slicks hooking up, 12psi in them, 6000rpm drop of the clutch. now that is traction...
oh and for the record he did a 12.45@110.6mph, unopened LS1 M6, race weight of 1655kg including driver, just with edit by d**k electronics, pacemakers and exhaust, over rad intake, diff gears and clutch, and the slicks of cause. for a pretty placid looking vt, it sure is launching well.

yeah ther is a slight differnece between slicks and street rubber tho
anything under 20psi is a waste of time. and xr chic. he knocked 3 seconds off his 1/4 time by reducing tyre pressure? lol i might have to try that next time. might be able to run a 11 |

eed - yeah - he ran a 17 second pass the first time (the one in the vid)
His 2nd run was a mid 14.
