As some of you may know the Fordrunner has been given the green light to get boosted. Now the hunt is on for a single turbo that will do the job.
The two main points I want from the turbo are the ability to support a "minimum" of 300rwkW with room to grow, and good boost response, full boost by 3000rpm "Max" and start spooling at 2000-2500. An MP T70 with a 0.68 rear A/R and P trim turbine wheel sounds like the obvious budget choice but ever since the name change from Master Power to Magnum Performance information has been thin on the ground. The other obvious choice is a turbonetics 62-1 with a 0.81 rear A/R and F1-65 turbine wheel. This is a borderline stock block splitter and is recommended for a 5 litre engine at up to 500 fwhp. It can do the job but its flat out doing it. Problem is, my local agent for turbonetics says its a very small turbo and I should run an A/R of at least 1.32 if I want to successfully run that turbo. Still keeping with turbonetics a T66 with P trim turbine and 0.81 A/R could do it comfortably and then some. Also a T58 with O trim turbine and 0.81 A/R could do the job too. I just don't know how much earlier it would come on than the 66. Other options are T70, 72 or 76 with either a P trim wheel or F1-65 (or 68). Another suggestion was a Borg Warner S300 but from what I've seen Its a large frame turbo that looks more at home on a diesel prime mover than my truck so it gets ruled out for space reasons. Another one was a garett GT42 but I haven't done much research on Garrett's. By the way the budget is a max of 2k. I can get most of the above built with a journal bearing centre for 1500 or less. Any other reccomendations? |

60-1 will spool at the same rpm's as the 62-1/t66/t04r/t04z IF they all have the same rear wheel and housing and are the same bearing setup on e7 heads.
Going from 1.00a/r down to .70a/r dropped full boost from 4000rpm down to 3000rpm. Max boost run on the t04r was 12psi Max boost on the 60-1 was 16psi 60-1 has bigger balls at lower boost compaired to the t04r but at 16 its past being efficient and just pumps out hot air. Let me get something straight. Since most of the recommended turbo's share the same turbine wheel (P trim or F1-65) The only real factor in turbo spool rpm is the turbine housing A/R? Therefore for a street 302 the rear A/R should be around 068-0.70 for full boost at the target rpm.
Now the deciding factor is compressor selection. |

The precisions use 62mm turbine wheels. That works out to be equivalent to an O trim.
From what I understand the anti surge compressor housing also slows response down, hence the smaller turbine to make up for it. I need to have a look at their compressor maps to see how they would behave. I think I've settled on a good combo which can hopefully support enough flow for a h/c/i upgrade down the track. Turbonetics T66 with a F1-65 turbine wheel and 0.68 A/R. I like it because it sits right in the middle of a 60-1 and a T70 and its compressor map looks reasonable. I'm no expert, but i reckon it should be ok for what you want.....
I think a GT4088R would be the go, with the right turbine housing. Obviously has the potential to split the block, but would look nice on a DAZFAB manifold.....lol..... The 5L has a short stroke, so spooling takes a bit, compared to the I6 4.0L. Good manifold design will get it spooling quickly.. Cheers Daz

The garret numbering system threw me off a bit there. They use major wheel diameters where as turbonetics use minor wheel diameters. The equivalent turbonetics unit would be something along the lines of a T64 with an O trim turbine wheel. Good spool (I reckon it would hit pretty hard). Price is a bit of a killer though. 1500 for a plain bearing oil/air cooled unit and 2000 for a ball bearing water cooled version.
Turbonetics offer air and water cooling for both plain bearing and ball bearing versions of their standard T series turbo's. Their selection of rear housings aren't as numerous as I would have hoped. But then again, maybe a 1.1 or greater A/R works well with a split pulse turbine housing. |

Are you going to build a bigger ci engine in the future? if so you have to think about turbo hp capacity
If the turbo fails who do you send it to? i rather local supported product hence why i suggested precision...

Local guy in Port Kembla sells turbonetics, borg warner, garrett and other brands, hollset. He can build me pretty much anything I want but trying to get ideas out of him can be hard at times. That's cause most of his customers are cashed up ethnics who's idea of a street car revolves around a 4000rpm stally.
I thought the precisions were a yank turbo. Will have to look at them in greater detail. |

As for power levels 300-320rwkW is my limit. I want to size the turbo for that.
If the block splits then I can either build a hi boost stock stroke dart block (or 331 if I have money to burn). What breaks next? If its the box (Toyota R series manuals are rated to 450-480 lb/ft) then I either call it quits and walk away with my head held high knowing I have achieved something special, or I pull the front diff out, whack an auto in there and go racing. |

I havent read all the posts but why not go 2 small turbo's? That way you can tune them to have boost for most of the rev range
