Hi all
I'm looking at a dedicated gas motor to go into an XF and want to turbo it. What are my options in the way of pistons to lower the compression of the donk to add some good boost into it? FYI: I'm looking at running a TO4 (approx 60mm blades), 1.15 rear and .7 front with up to 15 PSI. I'll also be running straight gas with a good ignition only system. Looking for all the advice I can get. |

mate i would suggest get a newly reco'd or a low KM engine that was dedicateed gas in it's life time and all you would have to do is get some xg / xh engine mounts and or k frame and a modifed sump.
i may be just a little bit on topic

This AU motor will be freshly rebuilt by me, what I'm asking is what are the options for pistson.

acl make a forged pistons, are even there normal race series will hold a little power, although a good conditiong stock au bottom end will hold 220ish rwkw with no problems. Maybe also look into ba pistons, im fairly sure the au and ba are very similar bottom ends so ba rods and pistons will fit, atomic make awesome gear fo the bas.

What sort of power are you after??
The std compression on A/U is ok with correct timing advance curve... ACL make a lower compression piston, but unless you are after 330 + rwkw 9.2 comp gives you very good throttle responce... Again look into reducing the amount of advance and she'll be fine..

A gas engine in good condition will be very adequate then..

the motor is getting pulled down and a freshen up regardless of how many k's it has.
so I really need to choose the best pistons for my setup. what would you personally run if you were aiming for up to 300rwkw? |

There is 40 miliseconds between forged piston and a decent hypo piston from distruction from bad detonation, tune ... We have two turbo 6's in our family, they both have std pistons, one is used as drag car and runs 375 rwkw with c16 fuel.. Its in the TUNE not build on a turbo - forced induction motor....The other is an A.U with std engine and compression with a lazzy 250 rwkw at 10 Lb...It has run up to 15 Lb without any issues... It's just the clutch and T5 stength that we lowered power level. Plus its my son's car... [its fast enough for now]
If you want custom pistons then there's C.P , Wiseco etc pistons, they would be $1600 or so... . The ACL's are more rugged than std Ford pistons.. Edit... ACL may have forged pistons now? Depends on price... Allow more ring gap... I see you have an AU engine?? Just machine heads ??? Or check with ACL ?? If its a dedicated LPG engine ?? Then I think comp is lower anyway ??? I wouldn't lower it too much!! You loose throttle responce ...

When i was building my cortina i was going to put a AU engine in with this combo. AU engine ACL high comp pistons race series piston, all acl engine bearing's and all all reco with a can to suit a GT35R or T04z and engine was gona set me back 2800.00 all fresh with springs and all and would make 400 flywheel hp no worries and will last on a good tune.
The ACL gear is heaps good for not a massive hp engine but if i wanted to upgrade to go bigger it was additional 2600.00 for rods and piston's from www.racespec.com.au so about 6500.00-7000.00 for a big hp engine This the ACL cheap engine i was aiming at a high 9 in my TE mini tubbed 9 inch billet axcels 6 point cage, alloy dash but i pulled the plug as i have other financial commitments. But now i have a 347 EF XR8 animal hehehe

good info, thanks for replying.. keep it coming
havent exactly got the motor yet, just weighing up my options at the moment as I'm doing a OHC conversion into an XF. I've come across this AU Green engine for a good price, so I'm going to snatch it up. Will the CP pistons fit straight onto the AU rods? Are AU & BA rods the same length? EDIT: what would be the better motor to turbocharge, an EF/L or AU? I'm guessing the AU, however have heard the EF heads are decent? Please correct me if I am wrong.. |

C.P pistons are CUSTOM made ...As with most aftermarket pistons.. You'll have to send them the specs you want that fit..
IMO for the power level ?? Just turbo a good engine ..Why make it more complicated and expensive... Any more than 250 - 300 rwkw and your starting to have transmission issues etc... Spend the time and money on tune rather than strong parts... Beter exhaust on Fairmont and another tune with better fuel, clutch held up this time...Bedded in...
