Hey guys,
Loving the cooler I got from Ivan. I got an EF GLi which will be getting turbo and a Venom front bar soon. I just want to ask bout the clearance. I read about trouble fitting coolers behind headlights, etc.. and I want to know how my sized cooler would go about fitting behind a Venom bar?

with the venom its fine and mainly only the bottom needs to be modififed abit....i havent fitted on in my venom bar but they have alot of clean space behind them....there are quite a number of turbod falcons with venom front bars such a brendan mocks 600rwhp turbo.

x 2 Pretty certain mine is that size and only needed a little trimming to fit. Seems to work ok in my application...

I was wondering if there ever is such a thing as too big an intercooler. Reason I ask is cause my brother wants to get a 600x300x100 delta fin cooler for his VL which is stock at the moment. I reckon its too big for what he wants to achieve (12 second street tyred VL) but he wants to get all the support systems up to scratch before he rebuilds the motor. I'm sure the 76 thick cooler could get him to his goal easilly but he has his heart set on the 100mm.
Also has anyone heard of a delta fin cooler before. i seen em on ebay the other day and they look rather impressive. The core comes to a point rather than a flat face like a bar and plate cooler or a round edge like a tube and fin core. It lets a lot more air pass through it with less turbulence therefore keeping the rad temps down. i know a few guys that have bar and plate coolers and their cars overheat in traffic cause of the lack of airflow getting to the rad. |

There's gotta be a zillion VLs running 12s and less with 76mm front mounts, but for me, if I was buying a new one, 76 vs 100mm, Id go for the 100mm... it may be over kill, but you want all the cooling you can get, but your only really going to see any benifits when your using BIG turbos on BIG boost
MAybe check out what the GTR guys have to say about thses coolers as I know of a few that have gone up to them and seen some benifits... but we're talking 350- 400 wkws though |

Oh, and if your overheating a falc with a front mount your cooling system isnt too crash hot... mine contantly hit 100deg on the dyno due to a crappy old rad and clutchy fan, new rad and thermos fixed that

The only thing you have to worry about when choosing a large intercooler is how much lag it will add to the system. There are two different types of lag. the first is spool up time - ie how long it takes to change the compressor speed to obtain boost, mostly coming from the inertia of the exhaust and compressor wheels, how much exhaust your engine produces and what A/R ratio your exhaust housing is. The other large time is your actual LAG, ie how long it takes to pressurise the system and have that airflow hit the cylinders. a very large intercooler will give you lower temps, and lower boost drop across the core, however if you were to fit say a 600x300x100 intercooler to a boosted 1L engine it would take AGES for the small turbo to push enough air through it to obtain useful boost at the valves. for a 3L engine with a resonable sized turbo I wouldn't be worried about fitting the 100mm cooler.

it does very much surprise me how many people talk about turbo lag and really dont understand exactly what they are referring to, about 99% of the time people are talking about boost threshold, not lag
boost threshold: is the minimum rpm that a turbo system will start producing positive intake pressure. ie large turbo not boosting til' 4000rpm is not lag. countless times you hear people say, they drove a car with a huge turbo which had heaps of lag, because it didnt boost til' high rpm.... THATS NOT LAG lag: is the time it takes the system to produce positive intake pressure, at wot, within the boost producing rpm. ie, boost threshold is 3000rpm, you go wot at 4000rpm, the lag is the time it then takes it to make boost...

Lag isnt an issue with these coolers, and on a 4lt motor... its just not an issue...
As an example of lag through a bigger IC, the IC i put on my volvo is 450x300x75 with 2.5in piping. This system is well over twice the volume of the standard IC and piping yet lag has completely gone and boost presure increased 2psi... and this is from a TD04 15G, tiny turbo |
