I too was concerned about the "oil smoke" lol. Good stuff

I dont use blow off valves If that s**t noise is just the air fluttering back through the turbo after backing off at full spool-up, can you imagine the loads your putting on the bearings. Seriously dude, I would be running a BOV. A plumb back one of course to avoid sounding like every other wanker that dumps theres out into the atmosphere for the sound. Just that noise would get on my nerves after a while, let alone knowing that my turbo was being slapped every time.

Ahhhh... compressor surge.
The great turbo myth... you dont need to lecture me about that, ive been playing with turbos for seventeen years now brother, none have ever broken from not running a bov, none, and Ive had ALOT of turbos... But thanks for the heads-up |

I see you got alloy piping and an alloy air box. sounds exactly like my brothers VL when he had a dose pipe and no air filter. No s**t you could here the thing from a few kms away on a quiet night.

But thanks for the heads-up Sounds like you've been playing around for about as long as I have, since the the old suck through carby jobs on holden reds and the cordia days (the days of s**t fuel and when everyone thought that 12 lbs was alot of boost). Trust me, your not doing the life cycle of the blower (or its bearings) any favours. Not to mention that bit of extra lag your getting as well. All the car manufacturers wouldnt add cost of fitting (plumb-back) BOV's for no reason. There are sound engineering principles behind their use. But I guess if you would rather have that noise (and a bit of extra turbo lag then),..... all I can say is everyone to their own I guess. After all, your the one who has to pay for and drive the beast.

The endless battle. Sounds like the battle of which medication can be cooked to give better drugs. I've known many cars that have been flogged for years running no BOV and not a single problem with the turbo whatsoever. Yes there is increased wear and tear but how much? How long do most people keep their turbo cars before selling them? Generally they get bored and sell em off way before compressor surge becomes a problem. The only real problem would be on an insane 1000hp drag setup running a single 100mm throttle body where the butterfly bends back due to the huge pressures and mass flow rates resulting in a throttle that is jammed open. And another thing, at least its not as bad as on a suck through system where the turbo spins harder as soon as you snap the throttle shut thn hammers the compressor housing cause of the huge vaccum its pulling. We've managed to munch a few like that at the uni. |

Well I'll put it out there that your video was pretty mad chef
What do you use to secure the camera out of interest? A mount off the headrest or tripod jammed somewhere?

I enjoyed the vid, good work mate!!
I agree with some of the boys but, I'd go nuts having that loud noise every couple of seconds; I love the loud whistle of the turbo tho.. thats serious stuff Im happy with stock performance, i could only imagine how yours goes haha.. awesome stuff.

Agree, the old suck threw types were real nasty on the little thrust bearing (little piece of flimsy sintered powder metal garbage) they have. Used to ease the throttle off on the old turbo 235 holden donk.
