Hello,

Just looking at purchasing a turbo kit. It comes with a non-water cooled T04 Air Rearch branded turbo...

As I'm still new to this is, this brand of turbo good or one to stay away from?

Also it doesn't have a screamer pipe, it just vents to the atmosphere, this is obviously bad and possible illegal is it?

and one other question I've come up with... For a T04 turbo, hopefully 200rwkw, would a bigger fuel pump be needed and is it better to replace the intank one or just another one in the fuel line? and what sort of rated fuel pump would I be looking at (are these rated in volume or pressure)?

Nothin wrong with AiResearch turbs, i bought a rebuilt one, it has a Garrett rear housing. I believe AiResearch went on to become garrett did they not?

You would be wise to put a bigger fuel pump. Something like a walbro 255l intank, just make sure you get a genuine one not a copy. They're almost a direct swap for factory one. Just need to do a couple of mods. This is what i plan to do when i get more cash.

oh ok then... that sounds neat...

bosch do one too don't they 044 or something like that I've seen written somewhere...

when turbos get "shaft play" are the repairable or this is too dear in our now disposable world?

Garrett used to be called Air Research,now they're owned by Honeywell Turbine.A screamer pipe is just a pipe approximately 5-10 inch long extension from the wastegate exhaust outlet.It still vents to atmosphere.To do it legally,the "screamer" pipe should go back into the exhaust system before the catalytic convertor.

Yes Bosch do an intank pump as well not sure if its the 040 or the 044 but im not sure how much it flows. If a turbo has too much shaft play get it rebuilt. New bearings and seals.

If its bushed can they be replaced with bearings, or they can only go in a bearing turbo?

Yeah sounds good... I think an intank pump might be the way to go... No extra wiring and will look neat...

bush bearing is just that - a type of bearing.
you thinking of ball bearing turbos.

there really isnt too much differnce between the 2, ball bearing turbos will come on boost slightly quicker, but also have a tendancey to wear out quick apparently.
if a bush bearing turbo is looked after, it will last for years.

if it does need to have the bearing replaced, the kits are cheap and if you have a good mechanical background, you can rebuild one yourself.

i had a T04e AirResearch turbo on my holden 202 and it went well. would be a good turbo on the 4l for some mild power with the right rear housing.

and as said above, AirResearch used be Garrett.

Again thanks for that... This is all much of a learning curve for me... So you believe a ball bearing turbo will not last as long as a bushed turbo?

There is no special tools required to change the bushes? They aren't a pressed fit... I might start pulling it to bits and see what I can get out of it...

I am chasing as lower power gain as possible with a turbo... What sized rear housing would you recommend for this application?

well in saying that a ball bearing unit will still last a while lol.
but it all comes down to what you want out of the car and how much your willing to spend.

a bush bearing unit is most common and still fine.

i wouldnt reccomend pulling the turbo apart without doing alot of research first.

theres a thread on calais turbo about rebuilding one, ill see if i can find it for you.
but dont think you need anything too special.

how much power are you looking at making?

I'd be stoked with 200rwkw...

Any help you have would be great... Just reading stuff on the net now... Now thw turbos I'm reading about seem to match mine... Do you recon If I bought a Garret T3/T4 rebuild kit it'd do an (obviously older) AirResearch turbo? Or turbos differ immensely?

the rebuild kit you get has to match the turbo centre (CHRA).

a T3/T4 has a T3 core and rear wheel with a T4 front wheel.
so in short, no it wont match.

Ok finally got down and had a good look at my turbo...

Printed accross the compressor housing is AiResearch T04
Printed on the plate on the rear of the compressor housing is these numbers:
408310 11
LA0311A
The Compressor is AR.60
The Turbine is AR.68
It is oil only
The exhaust is a T4 flange (from measurements I find on the net)

Now, is anyone familiar with what I have found? Can any one point a out a repair kit? Does this sound like it might be a T3/T4 hybrid? How can i tell if the front is a T3?

Any help would be greatly appreciated... Starting to get a bit hard to find gear...
