Are there any clear cut rules for BOV's?
I dont want to spend a fortune. Unsure on whether l'll be getting a plum back or standard it will be for a turbo set up on a ohc 4L inline 6 running approx 7-8 psi thanks |

yep the rule is if it vents to atmosphere it is not legal
you HAVE to use a plumback to keep legal |

If you pull a blow off valve apart you will se that it is just a spring and valve set up. nothing too it.
My car runs 13's down the quarter with about 12 psi and i use a $100 supercheap blow off valve. I took of the HKS valve and sold to my friend for $300. Dont pay for the name - anyone will do. |

Personally I wouldn't fit a blow off valve. People say that your turbo will s**t itself quicker without one but from what I've seen that doesn't appear to be the case. If your going to fit a blow off valve just for the psht sound then I'd kick your a*** right here and now.

Doesnt the backpressure from closing the throttle while boosting f**k with the compressor wheel?

The backpressure without a blow off valve not only ruins your turbo quicker it also makes it spool up slower after backing off the throttle. The back pressure pushes against the compressor wheel and stops or slows it so when you get back on the gas it takes longer to start making boost. If you want to run more than 15psi buy a good one. if not buy a cheapy.

Get one just for the sake it might save your turbo. Its cheaper to put in a $150 BOV than replace or rebuild the turbo. Cheap insurance.
Ive got a stealth FX BOV, it vents to atmo and can be turned into a plumbback by twisting the body section of the unit. If it vents to atmo or not its still going to make noise wehter its the pssht sound or the flutter. Mine makes both, it flutters anytime I see boost and makes the pssht noise only when I come off boost levels above 10 or so psi. |

Yes, and factory turbo cars use them for a reason. A simple cheap Bosche bov off any factory turbo car will suit your low boost set up.
You only need to start looking at the high priced bovs when your pushing higher boost, like 15plus psi. Not only do the smaller low priced ones leak on high boost but they are too small to flow the required air |

And don't go for too cheap... they might be fine for stock ish boost, but they tend to leak at higher boosts... . Thats correct, that is often the case. And make sure they are on tight!
Mine blew off last week and I lost 2 out of 3 bolts to secure it back on |

If I was to have a manual car I would fit one cause your always on and off the throttle. In an auto you just lean on it slightly to get up to speed and then ease off to maintain speed.
Yeah your turbo can s**t itself without BOV and massive boost. But how long do you expect your turbo to last with the lifesaving BOV? My brother has a VL turbo and that thing has lived a fairly hard live for the last 330,000kms and still does not require a turbo rebuild. |

There's more to BOV's than relieving manifold pressure when the throttle is snap shut.
Put your hand in front of a BOV outlet when the car is at idle. There's a fair bit of air moving thru. My car will NOT idle if you block the BOV - you simply cant ram air down the throat of an engine that doesnt want it - it surges, splutters and then stalls. Now, I realise with a supercharger it's always pumping air and this is not always the case for a turbo - but it means with no BOV the turbo is being slowed down which in turn creates some funky effects in the exhaust-side. I wouldnt even consider forced induction without one.

Mines an auto and its very easy to snap the throttle shut in normal driving, on and off boost... if your accecerating and hello, its time to hit the brakes because of ridicular peak hour traffic... guess what happens |
